Comments: Hello Michael,
We often think about you, listen to your music constantly, and think about those crazy times at Greeley when we were young and, well, crazy. I heard from an old classmate that Donny Sloan died of complications from Aides. I don't know if you remember him. We lost contact with all of the old Greeley bunch so it came as kind of a shock to hear about Donny. Anyway, we would love to talk to you sometime soon. It doesn't look like your schedule includes any concerts here in the Northwest, but we keep hoping.
Regards,
Tim and Nancy Vogel

Comments: It is wonderful to finally have your early albums on CD!!! Just got it in the mail today and couldn't wait to listen. I was introduced to your music back in 1977 and saw my first concert at Bemidji State. I also saw you many times on Dec.26. It has been almost 20 years since I've seen you in concert and I do miss them. Do you ever even come to this part of the country to perform? Enjoy the website.

Comments: Hi,

I am not sure if Michael personally reads these, but I thought I would take the chance anyways. For many years I have been a great fan of Michael's lyrics and how I enjoy seeing him in concert!!! Living in northern MN, I have traveled to Mpls and also to Bemidji to see him.

For the past four years I have been living with a chronic illness called MS. And my illness has been really hard on my body and there are lots of times I am either home bound or in the hospital. And when I have days that I am so sick I listen to Michael's music and it just makes me feel so much better!!!! I would love to be able to see him again in concert to thank him personally for sharing his talents with all of us.

Thank you Michael for your energy, your love of music and the gift of sharing it!!!

Blessings sent to you, Debra

Comments: Michael,

It is always a musical pleasure to hear you. It was wonderful having the other musicians to play with and for you to play. I was totally serious about the Christmas CD. I really think an a cappella tune is the way to close it and I would love to assist you on that in any way that I can. It would be an honor for me to work on such a beloved project with an artist that I admire, respect and just downright enjoy. If you ever get a request for a vocal arrangement of any of your tunes, let me know. I look forward to hearing and seeing you soon.

ORANGE-fully yours,

I work for KARE 11 in Minneapolis. Last fall we ran a contest called "Minnesota Idol". (I won't bore you with the details but, yes...it's what you think.) Anyway, I was talking to the winner after her several months of fame and some broken promises had gone by; (Her 1st CD is out and did pretty well.) and she confided that she would really like to be a writer. I was wondering if you have any advice for her. I would be happy to put you in contact if you're interested in yet another person hanging on your time. Thanks for the music and glad you're feeling better.

Comments: At 17 years old, I would lie in bed at night with headphones listening to my Michael Johnson tapes. He greatly inspired me to further my own singing and songwriting. I'm now in Nashville and Mr. Johnson is a part of the inspiration from my early years that made me make this leap of Faith. Of course, schmoozing at the Bluebird Cafe is obligatory and while there I learned of his upcoming appearance. I bought "live at the Bluebird" last night and listened when I got home. The rich voice and tasteful guitar styles brought tears to my eyes-- as though I heard the voice of a dear old friend. I'm sure this might sound somewhat melodramatic, but I owe Michael Johnson much thanks and hope to tell him so on September 6th. For years, I sang "Doors" in horrible little clubs, but often was able to captivate the attention of drunken fools long enough for them to ask "what was THAT?!?" "Michael Johnson" I replied proudly. Thanks, folks for this opportunity to share this. www.singspiritstudios.com

Have been a big fan for almost 20 years when a friend of mine loaned me a recording of "for all you Mad Musicians". Man was I blown away. I am a fingerstyle guitar player and Michael's guitar work has always inspired me, (I learned Cain's Blood and Walk me around your Garden off the record). I saw Michael live in Orchestra Hall once and at Gustavus once. Am glad to see you coming to MPls in Febuary. It's time to see Micheal live again. Wish you would publish some of your guitar licks in tab.

Comments: Michael,
I just wanted to thank you for your gift of both music and the written word. I have been a fan since I was a teenager and my older brother bought "There is a breeze" LP. We absolutely wore that album out. You were totally inspired during that recording. I don't think it was a super hit or anything, but it was a major hit in my life. I am a singer/songwriter/hack who plays at open mics around Boston, MA. I just want to thank you for being one of my favorite singer/songwriters of all time. I have only 4 that I totally respect, JT, Cat Stevens, Jim Croce and you!
I was so happy when I was able to get a CD (imported from Japan) a few years ago of "there is a breeze". Rooty toot toot for the moon was always my favorite. I felt like a teenager again when I listened once again just a few years ago.
I wish you well,
Thanks

Comments: Hi Michael,

I am Sonny Azurin and I was your bassist at your Feb. 1999 "Reminiscing" concert in Manila, Philippines. The reason I am writing you is I am humbly requesting for a certificate/letter from you certifying that I played for you. It can be handwritten or typed, whatever is convenient for you.
It is for my professional folio and it will be posted in my website along with the other artists. I have the letters of Christopher Cross, David Pomeranz and Lea Salonga already posted and am awaiting for those of Patti Austin, Michel Legrand, Angela Bofill, Kenny Rankin, Rex Smith, El Debarge, Phil Perry and Pauline Wilson. I have since migrated to Canada and am now a permanent resident here.
I will forever treasure my experience playing for you and I wish I could do it again. Thank you and God Bless you!

Comments: Michael,
I got into radio back in the late 70s and you quickly became my favorite artist. Among the Chicago, Doobies, Carole King and Fleetwood Mac songs I would play "I Know This Night Won't Last Forever", "Love and Sex" or "Mr. Arthur's Place". In fact, I met Thom Bishop at the station where I was working (Champaign, IL) and told him I liked your version of his song best. I don't recall the response. Anyway, I wanted to tell you how much I appreciate your music. I played your albums over and over...Dialogue was probably my favorite of the vinyl era, though You Can Call Me Blue was good, too. I got out of radio in the mid-80s, but was born again in 91, and was in a Christian Bookstore about 93 or so and heard this oh-so-familiar voice. Sure enough, it was yours on the Precious Child CD. I'm very curious, do you know the Lord? I was called to Christian Radio back in 97, called to a unique ministry in Blue Earth, Minnesota, and found out you are from MN and are in the Hall of Fame in New Ulm (in the listening area of KJLY). Anyway, my boss and I, who is also a MJ fan, were planning to see you in Owatonna a few years ago when the weather turned bad (it was December), we turned around and went home. Just wanted to tell you that I appreciate you. You have been a pretty big part of my life...at a distance, but in my heart.

Comments: Michael, Just a voice from your distant past - You probably don't remember me by name, but I was one of the origional Charlottes Web gang. I doubt that any of us realized just what we had going for us in the old days but my exposure to yourself and the likes of Fred and Ed Holstien, John Prine, Leo Kotkee, Tom Dundee, Mark Henley, Dick Pinney, Dave "Snaker" Ray, Greg Brown, Saddle Creek, and the list goes on and on but very importantly, at least in my opinion, and truely at your expense, Steve Goodman, had a tremendous effect on my life. By the way, I was at Karen and Bill's when you took the spill on the motorcycle, broke your collarbone and asked Steve Goodman to fill in for your sold out show that night. It was my job to meet Steve at the front door of the Web, get he and his guitar out of the car and into the building and then park the car (a light blue Pinto I think!)
Anyhow, thanks for the memories - looking forward to seeing you again. I caught your show at "On the Waterfront" a few years ago but couldn't get backstage to say "Hello"

Later,
Bill

P.S. I noticed a message dated June 28th 1999 in your guestbook from a Terry Auger. If this is the Terry Auger of "Saddle Creek" fame (with Jerry Morris), I would love to know how to reach him. I have not spoken with Terry in decades and considering the Terry Auger in your guestbook is from the Mn. neighborhood, I have a hunch that it just might be him. Can you help me out?
Thanks

I'm sure you don't remember, but you were kind enough to record all of your LP's on cassette tapes and forward them to me in Las Vegas. At the time I asked if there were any plans for future performances out West. It's been more than a few years and I had hoped to be included on your mailing list.I was happy to stumble on your website. Is there a reason that most of your performances have been limited to the east and mid-west? I hear your stuff on radio quite a bit and I'm surprised that with all the venues in this market I haven't seen your name. I've seen you in Florida and Minnesota and hope to have the opportunity to see you again. You're an enormous talent and I wish you continued success in the future. Hope to hear from soon.

Comments: Really enjoyed Michael's articles. Being at work - I had to work hard at not laughing at a few of the lines [including the one about the bus driver who swerved whenever someone was in the john] . . .
I'm a songwriter, guitarist, singer from India. Have had a rather different experience than Michael - having done concerts, dances, wine-bars, college gigs . . . in India & England.
For the last 3 years - Music Minister at 'Fishermen's House' in Tulsa, OK. It's an incredible gig even though there's no money in it. Captive, participating 'audience' every Wednesday & Sunday. No smoke, no drunks, no flying beer mugs, no travelling [well - I kind of miss the travelling - but only because I'm not a musical nomad anymore], I get to sing my songs as soon as they are written, have an incredible drummer & very innovative keyboard player/percussionist/graphics animator, pretty good sound system . . .
God is good.
I identify with one of your comments about your guitaring and your singing, though it seems like you have a stronger claim to 'made it' status than I have - though, by your definition, that's debatable!
All the best,

My name is David and I just wanted to tell you how much your music has meant to me. Some of my favorite memories as a little kid are driving home from a day in The Cities (Minneapolis/St. Paul) late at night, falling asleep in the back seat of the car listening to "That's That" and "Wings". I went to the last two Christmas concerts you did and I saw you at the State Fair last year and I am wondering why you are not doing any concerts this year in my area. I am fifteen years old and I know one other person my age who likes your music as much as I do. She has never seen one of your live shows, and even though I let her borrow "Live at the Bluebird Cafe" I think seeing you on stage and being able to shake your hand after the show is something she should be able to experience. Thanks for the memories and the best music I have ever heard.

Sincerely, David Wang

Comments: Dear Michael and/or Cindy,

I am truly looking forward to Sunday's concert. As a musician myself, music touches me that much deeper. Bare with me a moment as I share how important Michael's music has been in my life.

I first came upon "There Is A Breeze" in 1973 at the record store I worked. My girlfriend at that time had just (within the last 18 hours) left me for her "old" boyfriend. "There Is A Breeze" helped me get through that. A couple of years later I became very upset at my half-brother. He was in Omaha and found "Ain't Dis..." and "For All You..." and even though he didn't know who Michael Johnson was and at that time was my favorite artist, he kept the albums instead of giving them to me for my birthday present. (He'd paid $.99 for each). In 1980 I played "You Can Call Me Blue" for a fabulous weekend with my college sweetheart. Unfortunately on the way back to college from that weekend in Maine she decided she just wanted to be friends. "Empty Hearts" and "Don't Ask Why" became my anthems..."Give Me Wings" got me through a rough relationship in the early 90s...In the mid 90s "Company Man" and "Departure" (my fav of all time) were just beautiful creations of music that just make you feel good (even when the thematic material may not be happy).

I turn 50 next Wednesday. I can't sing anymore (some problem that the doctors were never able to rectify). I just moved here from CA with my wife of almost two years and turning 50 has been tougher than I thought. So I am really looking forward to hearing my favorite musician perform (and to buy the first "MJ Early Years" cd so I can tell my brother that I HAVE IT and I got it for my birthday!).

Thank you, Michael for your music, your poems, your spirit and the love you share through your music. You have been truly blessed and I am truly blessed to have been a recipient of your musical blessings. Thanks for being there musically. I hope to see you and get you to sign my "MJ Early Years" CD.

Your Biggest ORANGE fan,
Bill "ORANGE" Lyons

Comments: Yippee, skippee!! I'm singing again! Unfortunatly, I missed the Dec. 26, 2003 concert, but thank God my sisters and mom attended and heard about this website ("Ann" was the one who remembered seeing Michael frequently many years ago, playing frisbee with friends and a dog, while she was walking home along Hidden Valley Road in Minnetonka).

I had a few of Michael's albums in the 70's, and I used to play the heck out of them. Then one night in 1979, in an apparently not-so-rare moment of temporary insanity, I panicked and sent them home with my boyfriend--along with pretty much all of my favorite albums, for "safekeeping"...a new roommate had moved in, bringing with her a wicked, evil, dastardly, very scary stereo with a needle about as effective as a large crochet hook...which would have done considerably less damage to my vinyls, no doubt! I kept a few less important albums around, so as not to raise too much suspicion--phew! I was feelin' pretty smug and thinkin', "Ain't dis da life deluxe!"

Honestly, I thought I could trust him, but it turned out that half of his blood was Cain's blood -- a couple of weeks later he was singing "give me Wings", while my tune back to him was "there is a train every day, leaving either way." I fully expected him to do the honorable thing and return my precious possessions--NO SUCH LUCK--the CAD!

I never, ever expected that my polite, civilized requests for the return of my very own property would erode after 1-2 years into bouts of downright begging--all seeming to fall on deaf ears, just "chasing daisies...." Who knew that 20+ years later I'd still be "bluer than blue", thinking "life's a bitch (and then you die"), very much missing my music, but now, not being able to find it!

As the "waters of my soul were getting drier", Michael Johnson returned to the Twin Cities for another post-Christmas evening. Once my sisters had relayed to me their rave reviews and mentioned the website, I found it and rejoyced at it's order page. In a very short time, most of the 20+years melted away when my sister called to tell me "O B Glad, today is the one day...you've been waiting to...sing it one more time again!" My CD's had arrived! Michael, "you(-r music) still makes my heart turn over"--and it's even digital! Scratches won't be such a hazard, but I won't make the same mistake twice!!!

Now, if I could just find The Michael Johnson Album, I would once again experience "how lovely the good life can be!" Thanks for many lovely hours spent in live or recorded listening enjoyment--here's to many more--and I hope to catch you next Dec. 26th.

My ex- husband gave me the cassette then told me that Michael Johnson had passed on, so I didn't look for any more of Michael's music after that, but fell in love with his wonderful style and abilities. Come to find out, my ex's lies didn't stop at "I was asleep in my truck all night, passed out from drinking too much", and that Michael has a plethory of other cds and talents. I'm glad I let a friend borrow my cassette, or I would have never found Michael Johnson again! Hope to see him in Denver, as soon as possible now.

Comments: I've been looking for this album (The Michael Johnson Album) on a cd, but no luck. I have the vinyl one and just about wore it out in the early 80's so it doesn't make a very good cd or cassette. I tried to find it on Music City, but only Bluer than Blue was there. I love ALL the songs, but they don't appear on any of the cd's advertised on this site. Has this ever been on a cd or do I have to just listen to my scratchy cassette (I no longer have a turn table)??? The 80's were great and I would love to hear these songs again. I appreciate your time and your music!

We have listened and loved you for years. We did finally catch a concert in Cody,Wy several years ago and was truly amazed. Your sound never lets us down! I was browsing the net to find out which album contained "Rosalee" on it as our daughter is getting married and wants this played at her reception, her name is Rosa and although her middle name is not Lee, we would always sing this song to her and sub her middle name Lane instead. We live in Soldotna, AK now and not long ago you were in Kenai, but because of schedules we could not make it. Hope you come back. You have and will continue to entertain us for hours.

Comments: Hi Michael,

We met in Greeley, probably 1962, maybe a bit into 1963. I'm not sure how we met. I remember singing and playing together in your apartment near Glenmere Park and Greeley Central High School. Another recollection was going to Denver a couple of times to hear you perform at the Tangerine Room on Colorado Blvd.

I recall being struck by your playing, your ability to listen to a song on an LP and figure it out quickly. I recall being warmed by your performances in the way that Bob Grossman, who came to Greeley some time later, stirred me and many others along the way.

Recently, I recorded a CD and enlisted the help of a bass player friend from those Greeley days, Gary Auten. In the midst of working on the album he showed me a video of you with John Denver and another singer filmed in NYC, and Gary also had several of your albums that he let me borrow and it was memorable to hear the singing and playing I enjoyed years ago. This is the first time I've been to your web site. I appreciate the articles written for Singer-Songwriter, your experience and your humor ring true to me experience.

I live in Denver. I sing and play (still nylon strings, now of a flamenco flavor), including a year-long gig up in Evergreen that has enabled the chops. I have worked for several years as an actor and I do local touring with a one-man Mark Twain, Child's Christmas in Wales, Old Man and the Sea etc. As I catch a glimpse of your playing, performing and recording life through the albums and commentary, I too find it amazing that we can be smitten for life with "a good guitar and a whaling song". Though I've done some other things, still, a heart-ful song strikes me deeply. Happily, the past few years I've been able to return to singing and playing more fully and more often. It sounds to me that you've been able to fulfill several dreams, and more, you've come to let go of dreams that no longer have meaning. That sounds like wisdom to me.

My warm regards to you,

Rick Scheideman

Comments: Michael, I have enjoyed your music since the late 70's. I took my girlfriend to your concert at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN (1978?) and loved it - got married to her the next year and have been married for 24 years. I guess you could say we've been dating 31 of our 46 years.

Michael, I was thrilled to get reacquainted to some of your music when you performed at the Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce event three years ago. That night my wife, Charisse, was introduced as the incoming Chamber president and John Glenn and Tom Daschle were also guests. Charisse is the CEO of a children's hospital in Sioux Falls - Sylvia Henkin has been a Board member for many years. Your performance at the Washington Pavillion and the "Ponies" video were awesome!!

Since that time I have played some of your CD's to the point of driving my kids nuts. We have a cabin in the pines of N. Minnesota and put in a lot of road time - if I'm alone I can play your "Departure" album and sing to it until I need a change. This fall it kept me going on a couple of round trips! Well, it must have had some influence on my middle child (17 year old son, Christian), as he plays acoustic guitar now and is crazy over Leo Kottke. He drove to Winona earlier this fall to see him and sit in the front row! He likes your music, however since it is "my" music he must certainly have his own distinct musical identity. I am an old trumpet player and share spots in a local community band in the summer alongside my other son who is only 12 (Gabriel).

Michael, last winter I was visiting with Kirby Schulz at their great open house and he mentioned your friendship. We enjoyed visiting about your music, and I mentioned that I was always intrigued about the meaning of the lyrics of one of my favorite songs - "Imogene". Sounds crazy, but I have enjoyed this song 100 times and yet not understood it...I thought about this many times while travelling recently and finally decided I had better inquire directly!

I have always been a fan of love songs and balladeers - yourself, David Gates, James Taylor, Fogelberg, Michael English (contemp. Christian), etc., who are good lyricists. I need to catch up on some of your more current musical releases.

Michael, thanks for all of your contributions - if you get a chance, could you have someone drop me a line regarding "Imogene"? I've got you on the calendar for your February appearance in Sioux Falls. Have a wonderful Holiday Season!! - Sincerely, Eivind Oland

Comments: Hi Michael, realize now, teknobimbo that I am, that I left this message in the wrong place. I'll try this one and see what happens. I send you greetings from San Francisco where I have been living and working since 1984. I was unpacking some things that were in storage and Wings was among them, a cassette! Shows how long I've been out of the loop. Anyway, the sound of your voice inspired me to go to the web and type your name in. The article by Kandy Crosby came up and when I read about your annual Christmas Eve show and she asked what you might want for Christmas, I thought maybe you'd like a song that I wrote with Nancy Schimmel (Malvina Reynolds' kid). It's called Mrs. Claus and it's really cute. Nancy and I are pretty low tech and not marketing inclined so the song hasn't really been done much. Anyway, I just thought it would be fun to send it to you as a hello out of cyberspace from one who has so many fond memories of you. Somewhere I have a copy of New Release, the pilot we shot with you in Cleveland oh so many years ago....thought your kids would get a kick out of it and maybe I gave you a copy long ago. Don't remember. At any rate, it's always great to hear your voice and I'm so glad to see you are enjoying success and keeping busy doing what you love. Me too. I've written a full length musical that I'm trying to get produced among other things. Did a lot of childrens' music with Nancy Schimmel and in fact, a lot of our stuff is going to be done by the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra in the spring. It's an Earth Day symphony show with children's chorus called All In This Together. I myself don't perform anymore. I teach a lot, mostly composition and singing. I teach little kids how to write their own musicals and operas. It's a kick. Hard work though. I live in the most beautiful city in the world, at least in my world, San Francisco. Have worked with Nina Gerber and Laurie Lewis who know your work well. Nina thinks and I agree, that you are the most monstrously good guitarist. Anyway, I won't keep you. Please let me know where I could send Mrs. Claus. You will love her, I promise! Take care and Merry everything. Candy

I bet this finds you in another town or college campus but I wanted to say high and let you know how much Katie and I enjoyed spending a few days with you in Alaska... There is nothing like fresh sushi and warm sake...especialy over great stories. I have yet to find any other Japanese sushi bars that carry white king salmon. Next time I catch one I know what I am going to do with it. ummm,umh... I hope you are safe and this message finds you at peace. I finally caught two more nice halibut and I would like to send you some. It's frozen and vacuum packed so whenever you are up for it, I will send it out Fed Ex. Keep in touch my dear friend, Peace, Joe Ray Skrha

What a nice surprise to find such an excellent web site for Michael Johnson. All of "There is a breeze" and every other album right there! I also got a kick out of Michael's interview that I ran across at http://imusic.artistdirect.com/showcase/country/michaeljohnson.html
Good to see you are alive and kickin' Michael. Maybe see you in Austin sometime?

Comments: My husband introduced me to your music the summer before we married (1985). I loved the lyrics. We are rather conservative Christians and it rather blew some of our friends' minds when we included "The Good Life" into our wedding ceremony. I've always been grateful that our pastor trusted us to choose the music. It was my husband's first marriage and my second and I had been badly abused; some of the lyrics were just exactly how things fit for us. Thanks for your music -- it is uncommon, both lyrically and musically. We hope to get to one of your musical events. Glad I thought to try to find you. I've always thought it would bless you to know just how "Good Life" was used and has been a hallmark for our marriage. CJN

I've got a question - certainly a long shot - that you might have met Bill Hughes of Lazarus at some point. He had a Colorado connection - as well as a connection with Peter Yarrow & Noel Stookey. Bill was a guitarist, singer, and writer like no other.
Any chance that you knew him?

Comments: Many years ago 1973 I heard you at a concert at Augsburg College. I was a freshman music major who had a basic understanding of the guitar. Your playing overwhelmed me. Your cvapacity to combine your guitar with vocals shimmered. That night I wanted nothing more in the world than to do just that. I still remember this bizarre rendition of Take Me Out To th Ball Game done in what seemed six different time signatures.

I bought you albums and listened and worked. I found a man in MPLS Dan Perry who also played and sang wonderfully and i'd go to the bars he played just for a guitar lesson. The more beers I drank the more expensive the lesson.

I became a theatre major. I graduated. I began singing in local clubs, I decided to begin dancing at the age of 25 and 2 years later was teaching in MPLS. Somewhere along the line I shipped you a demo for your consideration. The tune i thought was perfect I now look back on with chagrin. It was simply too naive and simplistic. I moved to NY to follow a girl and had my heart handed to me. I was too proud to return to Mpls so I stayed. I pulled my guitar out after a long hiatus and there was your music again. I choreographed, danced, composed, and produced concerts for 4 years in NY and didn't make a dime. It was great.

I moved to Ca with my wife 16 years ago. I went back to school to become a teacher. A job I now have had for 10 years. I am the choir & theatre director at a local high school. And your music still speaks to me.

When I choose music for my groups I always look for pieces that are timeless. And for my own enjoyment your music holds the same for me.

I just recorded 18 tunes with my choir the other night and the level of commitment they gave to the music was astounding. They new their efforts would be set in stone that night and they responded. It was glorius.

I often long to have my own creative time. Teaching is wonderful and tpo tell the truth I'm probably better at it than anything else I've ever done and yet I long to turn a phrase to a melody in such a way that it woulf touch someone.

I enjoyed your sight. Your reflections from the road brought back many memories.(The Pas Manitoba springs to mind. SHUDDER!!) Aside from being one of the people I most want to listen to, you also seem to be a very thoughtful and glib observer of this world. It is appreciated.

I hope you might respond but, if not know I will always love your music. My singing "May You Never" has become a tradition in spring for my graduating seniors.

Thanks much,

M.M.

Comments: Michael,
I first heard Bluer than Blue in the summer of 1978 when I was traveling in England. I think that the song was number one over there, which was great. It meant that your song was on the radio all the time. Radio was soon to be my calling. I worked on an Adult Contemporary station in Soutern California from 1980 to 1988. There, we played a lot of stuff from the Michael Johnson album and Dialogue.
I taped them for myself and still have those cassettes. Every once in a while I'll check a music store to see if you have new stuff.
I bought Departure and Then and Now when they came out. However, I have always wanted to go back and start getting your first recordings.
I had some spare time tonight and did a search for your name and found this awesome website. I'm going to use it to get your early records and your concert album. Currently, I do a morning show on an Oldies Station, so don't get to play Michael Johnson. You can bet that I play your music in the truck and my boys love it.
One of these days I would like to see you perform. If you're ever in California, from San Diego to San Francisco, or even as close as Las Vegas, I'll be there. Maybe, on my vacation, I'll travel to see you.
Since my dad was in the service, we have friends everywhere.
I hope that you continue to make music. You've got a talent to really move people and that is so very special.

I just want to say that I am 35 years old and I was just a kid when bluer than blue came out. I have to research it but I think it was about 1976. That is just off the top of my head. I will find out when you released it by reading about you and your songs I hope. Anyway I think I was about 11 or so but I really loved the song and always liked to sing with it when it came on. About 2 years ago I downloaded an MP3 of it off Napster(sorry I didn't pay for it lol) and I periodically listen to it. It is probably my favorite out of the big napster download collection I would say. Also I wanted to say I had my mother drop by my place the other day and I let her here some new pc speakers I just bought. I played bluer than blue and she was on cloud 9!! She hadn't heard it for years I think. Of course she isn't listening to the right channels right? Just wanted to say that song is still great today. I will go find out other songs I may know of yours too. Gotta go, good luck as a contemporary artist or songwriter. Let me know if you play in the far northern california area. Thanks Steven J Schromm

Comments: Dear Michael,
I've listened to and loved your music since you gave a concert at Goodman Auditorium in Virginia, MN (Iron Range) in the fall of 1975. I was eighteen and a freshman in college then and you had just released For All You Mad Musicians. I heard you again after that, a number of times, in Bemidji and Minneapolis. You were one of my inspirations to start playing guitar, which I still do.

I was overjoyed that you released those first three albums on CD--I had been waiting and hoping for that. I've come to your web site again today to order another copy for a friend of mine who also listened to your music back in the old days.

I'm settled now, teaching English at a small Catholic college near here. Almost thirty years after I first heard There is a Breeze, I'm still listening to it. . .

I hope I get a chance to catch you again in concert.

Take care.

As we are not in Boothbay Harbor this time of year, the 'Bull Run' does not look like a bad ride for us in the Boston area. We enjoy your 'Live at the Bluebird'CD alot.

Nevertheless, for those of us who, for whatever reason, still struggle to find and further our own 'voices', it is a huge assist to have honest singer/songwriters successfully plying their trade. Especially at a time when we're all surrounded by these banquet tables of conglomerate-backed noise, packing so little "nutrition".

Thanks for the continuing sustenance!

Did you do that song? It was so beautiful, I just loved it. Please let me know if possible. It's been over a year now.

Comments: I played a couple of gigs back in 1990 or so with Michael....I was actually playing with Dave & Sugar, but Michael was there too creating incredible music as always. I remember telling him I'd love to play with him sometime, what an incredible talent. Now I'm creating commercials for radio, a far cry from the inspiration that he provides through his music, but still my hat in the ring nontheless. They will at least be the best commercials you'll hear! I'm working with a near Michael Johnson caliber guitarist or I could never make that claim. My best to Michael, he's the best.

Comments: one of the earliest memories i have in life is of one of your concerts at gustavus adolphus college's alumni hall. i was sitting in the middle of the eisle with a friend of mine talking to you about how much my dad loved your music. it became an annual event for my family to go see your show. i saw every one, not always from the eisle, from when i was wee until about fifteen.
then, the ridiculous time in a boy's life when he's "too cool" to do things with his dad, a reminiscence where regret has no equal. thank god it only last a while.
i ended up attenting gustavus and every year, when december rolled around, i would trek (and you KNOW what that trek looks like in december) over to bjorling to see the show. i'd meet up with my parents and sit with them during the concert.
now it's years later, and i'm eeking out a living as a mostly-working actor in washington dc. you don't come out here. why don't you come out here? i wish you would come out here. i mean, i like the foo fighters and all, but what is it about this place? is it the whitehouse pet? the crime? the redskins?
at any rate, i just wanted to thank you with everything in me for giving me the most amazing aural sense memory of my family, especially my father, i could ask for being this far away.
oh yeah, and thanks for old yellow car.

Comments: One day, maybe 7-10 years ago, I was driving in my car listening to the radio and I heard a version of Bluesette played on a Classical guitar. The composition was incredible. I didn't catch the artist's name and I should have stopped and called the station immediately. But like a fool, I drove on. I've been searching for that piece ever since ( sort of like a search for the holy grail ). With the internet, I may have a chance. I searched on "bluesette" and "classical guitar" and came to Michael's Web page. I'll try to find his bluesette CD somewhere and see if he is the artist. Otherwise, anyone ever hear an overpowering rendition of bluesette for classical guitar?

Comments: Michael,
I just wanted to thank you again for the music Saturday night in Rockford.
We stopped over at Seranos afterward to eat and I was the tall woman that shook your hand and thanked you before we left.
Your music can really reach out and touch me, I was afraid that when John Denver died I'd lost that, and one of my biggest regrets was never writing John and telling him just how much his music affected my life. So I want to make sure I don't make the same mistake twice.

Thank you for your music, don't ever stop! I can tell when you come out with a new song/album if your life is going OK or not, just by the way the music feels, it's a direct refelction to your heart. Some people listen to music, and then there are those of us that 'feel' it. Saturday was a night full of feelings, the music touched my heart and broke it too....

Take care...and I'm looking forward to seeing you "strap on your new Dick" in Rockford real soon.

Beth

Comments: Dear Michael,
Just a note of thanks for all of the wonderful albums and concerts that I and my then girlfriend (now wife with 7 kids) enjoyed back in the late 70's early 80's in Chicago. "For All You Mad Musicians" was "our" album. I was also quite thrilled that summer in '78 when I could go to any juke box in America and listen to you.
I was playing the guitar, mostly finger-style stuff, until I heard that record and discovered that I wanted to sing. In short, I've been writing and performing here in Jerusalem for the past 20 years, and have put out a few recordings, many of the arrangements are definitely in the "Michael Johnson" style. A heartful thank you. You made
a big difference in my life. And a speedy recovery from the car crash.
With affection,
Burt Salenger

I almost stopped up to speak with you after the show but, if you remember (HA) I'm shy. We met back in the 70's when you stopped by McCarthys because I think you were dating one of the waitresses... and I was dating one of the bartenders... and we exchanged comments about music. My 'brush with greatness'. Anyway, it was great to hear you... and I have a question as to whether 2 of the songs you sang have been recorded and are available: It's my Job and You Make Me Feel So So. I just loved them and would love to share them with my brother who used to perform (even at McCarthy's back in the 70's) but is now simply known as the Singing Butcher, combining his vocation with his avocation!! Great to hear you again and hope it will become an annual event at the State Fair. Warmest regards, Jeanne Tuvey

My husband and I are big fans of your music, and find it to be a fresh drink of water amidst today's "hot" country (which I think is far from it). I get some music off of Cowpie.com, or individual web sites of my favorite artists, such as Emmylou Harris, who is my other inspiration. Please let me know how I acquire these.
Best wishes to you and may your future be as bright and creative as your past.

I go the album when it first came out because I am a big fan of both of them. That song touched my heart and the heart of my daughter. I tried everything to find sheet music for it. That song will be played at my daughters wedding instead of "Butterfly Kisses". It means so much to me and even more now that I know for sure that you were involved in writing it. Comments: I have several cassettes (before CD) that I have listened to many, many times. I replace them with Cds whenever I can. The quality of your work is wonderful and timeless. I went to see Alison Krauss in Ft. Smith a couple of years ago right after the "Now and Then" CD came out. Her show was shortened by rain and I jumped up on the stage to help cover up the equipment. As we waited for the rain to slack off, I stood for fifteen or twenty minutes and visited with Alison. She was so sweet. We got to talking about the duets she had done and had a lot of nice things to say about Michael Johnson. She is as big a fan as I am...and that is saying something. Thank you for the times your music has helped me down the road of life. It has been a long road and sometimes too curvy and bumpy, but your music will always be in my collection and will always bring a song to my heart. I hope to make a concert next spring in Texas or Arkansas. You'll recognize me, I'll be the guy about your age with the tears running down his face.

Comments: My name is Jordan Uselton, I recently went to hear Micheal Johnston at the Bluebird cafe. Mr. Johnston was there along with three other men and they all had this wonderful jam session. That was late june, I forgot the date. Well after the show I had a flat tire and my girlfriend and I were waiting inside for our ride to get there. We ended up having a nice conversation with Leo Mr.Johnston's son. Well, my parents just recently in downtown franklin saw who I believe is leo and Mr. Johnston play guitar together. My father said it was awesome. Well I myself play guitar and write songs and I would like to hook up with him and see how our music turns out. So if anyone knows leo personally please tell him to write me someday. I live in Franklin and I think we could make music come alive. I will be checking my email daily and looking for responces on this site.
Thank you,
Jordan

Comments: I count as one of the highlights of my college years the day I met Michael Johnson in 1968. Denver and Boise, too of course. Michael, you borrowed my cufflinks that night at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, IA. I had to send someone old enough to get into the bar afterwords to get 'em back. Still have them.

Spoke with John Denver two weeks before his departure. Where's Boise these days? Last time I saw him he was in Duluth, Mn - long ago.

I think you were a neighbor at one time as well(?). Excelsior, Mn.

Been following you ever since and enjoying your music. Waitng for you to hit Houston. May have to break down and drive up to Big D in January 2002. Wouldnt be the worst thing I ever did.

Im glad you havent broken your hip and dropped out by now. Have you thought about doing Broadway again anytime? You could, you know...

I was visiting your web page and Im amazed! The articles you wrote taught me so much just by reading them... they're awesome! the songwriting one, and the stage fright one REALLY struck me--- that helped SO much- I didnt know YOU got stage fright too- I guess everyone does....

Anyway I just wanted to drop a message in the guest book since I was at the site anyway-

Oh- and if you ever make it to Ohio- promise me you will let me know so I can get tickets to the concert and see you- I will always look at your itinerary to see where you are and when- but let me know if you can!

I finally got your CD (Then and Now) delivered... I ordered it and it FINALLY got here- all I can say is this-- I LOVE IT!! Especially "Bluer then Blue" but Hobo sang that one before so I remembered it-- and "give me wings" I LOVE that one too!

Im heading back to OH next friday-- so you wont hear from me till like the 16th or so of August- but till then I will be on-line hoping to get an e-mail from you! :-)

Last night I told Hobo I had a surprise for him-- I introduced a song I wrote as "My Inspitation" a song I wrote for Hobo-- I think he got -- a bit teary eyed--- I was so happy that he liked it! it all went as planned! it was awesome!

Anyway hope your doing OK- Drop me an e-mail if you get a chance.... you know my address. I've written you like 4--

Love ya'

Comments: I listened to my new CD of your early 3-album compilation last night and was transported back to being 19 and in college at Southwest State University in Marshall, Minn. ... and the sweetness of that youth and idealism and first love and first exposure to a single musician doing his magic with a guitar.
Thank you for the memories and for re-releasing that music so I can share it with my daughter. My albums with your music are long ruined from many moves and Texas heat... but now I have the sounds again! I bought the CD as a treat to me for my birthday... 45 on July 17th... and the hours I spent last night listening and singing along with the still familiar tunes and words brought great joy and a renewed appreciation for the experience of words and music through my own experience of 45 years.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
And I'm looking forward to your performances in the Dallas area.

Comments: Michael (are you the one reading this or do you have a designated person for that?): I just had to take this opportunity to tell you how pleased I was to have my friend (and yours) tell me about this site. Cheryl P. was at your outdoor gathering on Friday at the Brewery here in Sioux Falls. She said it was a small gathering but wonderful none-the-less. When she showed me (and allowed me to listen to) your Early Albums CD I was thrilled. I have been trying to find these on CDs for some time. I have been a fan so long that all I have are the albums. I can't tell you how much I enjoy your music. Well, actually I can. I am a member of the South Dakota Poetry Society, and I can tell a fellow poet when I hear one. It is a such a blessing to have the ability to reach another person with words. You add that second layer of music and create magic. God bless.

P.S. When Cheryl allowed me to listen to this I accidentally spilled coffee on the jewel-case....she was gracious and said that at least it is now stained with her 2nd favorite beverage (the first being beer.) I have asked with my order if there is any possibility of getting a new insert...Luckily, the CD was NOT in the case at the time. Don't know why I shared that exactly other than it was such a Cheryl thing to say. (I don't know why you have let her chauffeur you around in the past, she is such a maniac behind the wheel...but so entertaining you tend to forget.)

Again, I am so looking forward to receiving the CD.

My wife Jean is a big fan since her days at Wartburg College. In fact you came and performed for my sister-in-law, Sarah Salzwedel's 40th birthday last year. Jean's brother Jack Salzwedel arranged it in Waunakee, Wisconsin last summer. I hope you remember, because we loved it and had a wonderful time. Well, the real reason I am writing, is that Jean's birthday is coming up and she wants the album with "Bristlecone Pine" on it. I find out from you web site that the album, "Michael Johnson", (Atlantic 82304-2 from 1992) is no longer available. I could be a big hero if you could let me know if there is any way to get a hold of that album/tape/CD.

I hope all is well with you. Let me know if you are coming to the Milwaukee area any time this summer. We would love to see you again.

Thanks for your help,

Our second date was a concert (Guthrie or Orpheum, the memory goes first). I recall the audience requested the SUPER VALU promo. I have just ordered the early music set for Vicki for Mother's Day. In any event, I am taking a flier and am going to ask a question (which may never get answered) but here goes....Any suggestions on where someone who has written a bunch of songs (of course copyrighted) and simply wants to solicit them to singers/artists (which is of course what everyone in Nashvegas wants to do isn't it? )....whaty I'm trying to ask is how does one go about it.....is there a publication that lists addresses etc...? Or does everyone need to know a Tony Arata, Don Schlitz, Bob DiPiero etc.. to get somewhere? In any event we all had a great time and greatly admire your talent as a singer/song-writer/entertainer. I'd love to hear from you. Is there any way that I can get you to come perform in the Phoenix, Arizona area. I don't know how to set up a booking, but I will do whatever I can to make it happen. I've really missed you, since I moved from Rockford. My son Michael says hi to you and is also a big fan. It is amazing how fast our boys have grown into men. He would love to see you. I don't remember if I ever brought him to a concert when he was a kid. But we fight over your CDs. It seems that they never grow out of the "hit the refrigerator, the movies and the Cds as soon as they come in the door" phase. Michael has his own condo, but he comes over to raid my music, food and DVD stash. I guess I'll have to buy him his own copies of your CDs.
Your friendship meant a great deal to me when I was going through being single again, and your music has always inspired me. Thank you for touching so many of us.

Comments: I was wonderfully surprised to see that the early albums were now available as my old vinyl disappeared into the cosmos long ago and I have missed hearing so many of the tunes I love. I first saw Michael in Sioux city Iowa and met him backstage after the really informal concert at Morningside college. His soft demeanor and ability to laugh at himself made everyone feel at ease. He also played a little effacing ditty about couintry music which in later years I found even more amusing. Its a pleasure to reconnect to music I have found to be very beautiful, heartfelt and timeless.

Comments: Hello Mike, I am one of your long lost fans from the early 80's. We have spent time together in Decorah, IA and in Minneapolis and Waverly, IA at Wartburg when you used to do your early concerts. Do you remember the concert at Luther College one of your first times playing there, and a group of CRAZY camp counselors took you out to the bar in town when you were staying at the Cliffhouse. We played pool, sang songs and had a riot together. One of us still has your Coke can from that night!! I will write more later but would be very interested in seeing you again. How is Stanley?? your Wife?? Do you still have the t-shirt we gave you from a concert. On the front it says EWALU?? Write back if you get this message and would care to get in touch... your friend, DC

I'm looking forward to seeing you in April at the house concert.

Take care and thanks for the music.

MJ,
Have been performing your style of music for quite some time. I really enjoy playing Hugh Prestwood's music. I was recently playing "Bristlecone Pine" at a private party and the woman in the front row got a nosebleed. Talk about effective lyrics. I'm looking forward to seeing you in Sioux Falls on Feb.14.

I read your two pieces on Perseverance. What I tell friends is, my greatest boast is that I done nothing but write for a living for 29 years. And you...the same for music, no? Anyway, I have no idea whether you actually read this stuff, but I'll say my name and see if you answer. It would be sweet if you remembered me. I came across your web site and your articles and was wondering if you'd give me permission to reprint your "Solo Performing, An Overview" article on my web site: Acoustic Fingerstyle Guitar

My site is a non-profit special interest site visited my thousands of guitar players each week and I have a growing collection of articles of interest to fingerstyle guitarists. Your article would definitely be of great interest to my visitors. You can see what this article would look like here:

There are of course credits and links back to your site. Let me know if you'd allow me to add this article to the site.

Thanks for your time.

It was great to meet you after the Minnesota Fair Board Convention show case on Friday night. Hope your concert went well on Saturday night in St. Peter. I was bummed out when I found out that when the concert was rescheduled we had the committment at the Fair Board Convention. It was a pleasant surprise to see your name on the list of the show case participants. I look forward to your concert next year in St. Peter and please play "Political Science."

Comments: I am looking forward to Michael's rescheduled performance Jan. 13 at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN. I haven't seen Michael perform since a unique concert at the now closed Cat 'N Fiddle in rural New Ulm during the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame induction of Johnson quite a few years ago. There were only about 100 people, but the intimate setting was memorable. I'm hoping he'll play "Give Me Wings," for it reminds me of letting go of my daughter, Ambryn, who is now a sophomore at Gustavus. She bought us the tickets for this concert. Thanks.

Michael, I'm disappointed your history didn't say anything about you living in MN. I was even a fan during my downward spiral into alcoholism. Been sober a long time now and even had the wonderful experience of seeing MJ and Don S. play together at the West Suburban Alano in Minnetonka. Don S. can sure play that harp, but nothing compares to Michael's voice and guitar playing. I'm also a friend of Joseph's, a former sponsee of yours. He can imitate you to the T. Sure have missed you at Orchestra hall the last few years. I think I'll call Joseph and see if he wants to make a road trip to St. Peter on the 13th.

I've been a fan for years and have purchased your music at your site, most recently LIVE At The Bluebird Cafe and the Early Albums. I really wanted the live album because my wife and I had to pass up a chance to see you perform live in Greenwich, CT last year because of a sudden Illness. I rgretted not being there and the live album at least gives a flavor for your in person performance. Company Man is one of my all time favorites and I was glad to see that it was on the album. Hope you come to our area again so we can see you in person.
Thanks for the music and keep it coming!

Comments: Hi Michael!!!

We met briefly last night as you passed by my table and we tried to recall a show you did in Canada. (I was the one you so graciously told not to sit down for my chair had fallen over as I got up to speak with you. Thanks for choosing to warn me over a visual I'm sure would have been tempting to be tight-lipped about). It could have been the Black and Wy tour I saw you on but I'll have to email my friend, Mark La Pointe back home and ask him. I know he'll remember because he was able to go back stage to meet you that night (a major highlight for him as he too is a huge fan!!!) Thank you so much for sharing your gifts of music and laughter. I was expecting incredible music but I had know idea how funny you were!!! I had the same experience when I went to see Deepak Chopra speak ...he too was not only intelligent but very funny, who knew?!! I was so inspired last night after the show that I came home and wrote a song. It still needs a little work but the first line is "I wanna write a song so great you'll never hear it on the radio" (a topic you and I touched on for a moment last night). It goes on to talk about wanting to do things in life to the fullest and realizing that the best things in life are seldom obvious (ie. God usually comes thru a window and rarely a door). I want to thank you all last night for the inspiration for this one. I'll send it to you when I'm done if you're interested in hearing it!! Let me know!! Well I should sign off here but I just wanted to let you know that your music once again did what music is meant to do and that is move people. Another magical night at the Bluebird Cafe!!!! If I continue seeing shows like the one last night I really need to take up stocks in Kleenex...there winning out here big time!!! Thanks for inviting me to write you or I probably wouldn't have but your invitation pretty much confirmed that you read these comments. Hope to hear from you and if not Happy Holidays ("Christians roasting on an open fire", too funny!!!) and I'll do my best to catch you the next time you're in town!!!
love and light,
lisa

Comments: My sisters and I have been fans of yours since the 70's, when we use to listen to a radio station in L.A. county, KNXFM. They played alot of your music and the great music from other artists which no other station would play. My sister has your Dialogue Album and since turntables are hard to come by...I went out last year and bought the Then and Now CD. Of course, I wish the song Doors was on it, but at least I have one of your CD's. Are you ever planning on coming to LA? We wish you would, so that we could have the opportunity of hearing you in person. You are truly an outstanding songwriter and singer, and I wish there was a station that dedicated their time to playing your style of music. Whatever happened to all those artists who sang that style of music. (Jennifer Warrens, Lauren Wood, Amy Holland, Michael McDonald, Maxis, Sneaker, ....the list goes on and on if you hated pop and hard rock in the 70's. Anyway, we're so glad you're still out there performing, but if you could perform closer to L.A. life would be grand. Donna

I worked a few years ago at the Tower Records here in Nashville, and you came in a few evenings...we talked about Peggy Lee & Rosemary Clooney. I was struck by how modest & kind you were. I just discovered your Greatest Hits on Razor & Tie and was so happy to hear those songs on disc. I recently lost my mom to cancer and have always felt that "The Moon Is Still Over Her Shoulder" could be the theme to my parents' 35-year marriage, although I'm sure you hear that all the time. Comments: Driving home last nite I heard one of my all time favorite songs on the radio. It was "That's That". I had the windows of my red cavalier rolled down and the radio turned up as i sang along with gleeful abandon. Just when i was thinking that it didn't get much better than that, i saw a deer walk across the road in front of me. I stopped and watched this delicate and gangly creature cross, the music still playing, and thought, "Wow. Thank you, God, for beautiful little moments like this".
I saw Michael Johnson perform at the Wildcat Ranch in Navarre, Ohio back in the fall of 1991. He was the headliner at a benefit concert for Richard Laverne Baus, my father who had died from cancer the previous summer. The money raised went towards helping my family pay for his medical expenses, which were more than we could afford. Thank you, Michael, for the help.
I had grown up listening to my mom's copy of "This Night Won't Last Forever", a 45 that's nearly worn out from years of countless playings. Both Mom and i were touched and thrilled to see Michael play live. He was fantastic. We haven't been able to see him play again since, namely because we've never heard of him coming to our area. I'm glad to have found this website in hopes of finding a concert listing in our area sometime in the future. Mom and i would love to see him play live again.

Looking forward to Clearwater

I have heard some of M.J.s music in the past, but to be honest with you I never knew he was. Personally I can't play a lick on the guitar or any other instrument, but I still really appritiate the hours and years it takes to perform at such a high talent.
I currently do not own any M.J.s rrecordings, but I plan to purchase some soon. THANKS, Daniel

The song called "Diamond Dreams" is getting worn out on my tape. I see this great music video in my head each time I play it. I just really love the whole album and would like to keep it forever.

Let me know if you ever put it on CD.

Comments: Over the past year I've picked up all the reissues on CD and have totally immersed myself in this great music. What's unusual about this is that while I'm familiar with some of your radio hits, I didn't own the original discs. After your appearance with Wynonna/Clint Black a couple of seasons ago, I decided to find some of these CDs and am very glad I did. It was at this live show that I was completely mesmerized by your incredible guitar playing and wonder why this incredible gift hasn't been captured (more) on these years of recordings? I've seen more music and theatre live than probably anyone I could ever know -

I've just ordered the Early Years compilation (I already have and love the "There Is A Breeze" disc from Japan along with all the others) and look forward to keep in touch with you and your music.

Best regards -
Aris
PS - I've listened to the song called "Dialogue" about 50 times this week - there must be a story to this song. This song just yearns to be sung within the context of a Broadway show...

Since I was a little girl, I have always listened to your music. You are my favorite performer and I would like to thank you too for writing songs that would become the soundtrack of my life. Your music has been my source of inspiration and your songs are so beautiful I could not imagine my life with out it. I grew up and fell in love...your music was always my theme song. I never even dreamed of watching you performed live, but, Feb. 1999 I was lucky enough to watch you perform in a concert here in Manila. That was one of my most unforgettable moments! I was moved to tears as I listened to your golden voice. I only regret one thing though, I was not able to get your autograph and did not get the chance to pose for a picture with you! I got Mr. Stephen Bishop's as well as Mr. David Pomeranz's , the two other great talents that performed with you that night, but even so, I was so downhearted because I never even got to shake your hand! Oh well, I could wish for a next time. . .Thank you so much for your music. I love you so much! God Bless you!

In the early 80's I was going thru a very painful & ugly divorce and your music is one of the only things that helped me to remember that there was light at the end of the tunnel even if I could not see any at that time. Your album "Bluer Than Blue" also helped friends of mine in the same situation. One person loved your album so much I never got it back. Now that I've found your website, I'll get a new copy!! Hope to see you in Boone,

I LOVE your music. It has so much meaning and life. I love 'Dialogue'. That song is so pretty. Since I'm only 13 years old, not many of my peers know your music. I tell everyone that if they want music to make them happy, to make them think, or just to listen to that they need to listen to your music. Even if they just listen to one song, I know they'd be hooked. Thank you for giving me music that i actualy like.

(if you're originally from up here, you may know the towns). I guess if anything changes in the dates - it will be in the concert page. I don't know if you ever bop around in the areas after your shows... if you're still in the central WI area Fri/Sat 7/14, 7/15, don't know anyone, and need a place to eat/crash - let me know. I enjoyed your concert Sunday evening at Orchestra Hall (Pops). It was SO different from all of the many other times that I've heard you perform. Although I do prefer your solo acoustic sound more than the orchestra background music-it was still great! I was talking to a man at the next table who said he had followed you for about 3 years. I realized that I have been your fan since around 1974 (?) or so. I heard you at the Guthrie, and locally here in the Twin Cities, SCSU, etc. 26 years, is that possible?? Maybe I'm your most loyal fan?! Anyway, keep up the great work.

My wife and I have attended your Christmas concerts for many years and really missed it this past year. However, it was really nice to hear and see you last Sunday at the "POPS" at Orchestra Hall. It was such a different sound, and very enjoyable. We had a great time hearing so much stuff we hadn't heard before. I wonder how you felt about the concert. Any thoughts???
The only drawback with the orchestra is that I couldn't hear your wonderful guitar playing as well. I also would have liked to hear a few more favorites like "That's That" and "Ponies". Thanks though for a great end to a fun weekend We look forward to seeing and hearing you again soon.
Sincerely,

Comments: Michael's music was the "soundtrack" during the courtship of my wife in the late 1970's. Many an evening over the years we have danced in the living room to "The Very First Time". We had the pleasure to see Michael live in Madison Wisconsin twice in the early 80's and I almost snuck my wife out of the hospital on the day our second son was born (3/14/85)to see him perform at the "Church Key" in Madison.

We have lost you a few times over the years, as we moved around and didn't catch enough country stations to follow your musical evolution, but caught up again around 1989 with a tape that included "Whisper Your Name", "That's That", and "Roller Coaster Run". Glad to have your "Very Best" compilation on CD, its hard to keep the turntable working for our old vinyl.

Now that I've bookmarked the site, I will look for performance dates in Southern WI and surprise my wife with tickets. It will make her year!

Keep up the great music. We'll keep buying it. Have you ever recorded "My Old Yellow Car"? Enjoyed hearing you play that in clubs many years ago. Thanks for all the great songs for Cheryl and I.

Comments: Christmas '99 brought a modem into our house but the better present was discovering the Michael Johnson website! I have followed your career for many years, my first concert was in 1974 at Ravinia. Imagine how excited we were when we found an upcoming concert ONLY 400 miles roundtrip from our home! The decision to go was easy, getting there was not. My family and I drove the Chicago expressways through a raging snowstorm and the outlying farmland soon became a white-out. What were we doing? After dropping off the kids with family, my brother in law and his wife navigated the country roads from Madison, Wi. with us to find Whitewater and the tiny Cafe Carpe.

The Cafe was certainly a contrast to the cold and snow outside. It was warm and inviting, full of friendly people who welcomed us to the back of the bar where you were performing. What a wonderful place to enjoy your music! Jeff Hickey did a great job of warming up the audience (as did the cognac I was enjoying). You took the stage and 14 years of waiting to see you perform live again became a reality. The audience was equally enthused and it was apparent that you have very loyal fans in Wisconson.

Your performance did'nt disappoint! Although many of the songs were new to me personally, they were of the same texture and style that I've come to love through the years. We especially enjoyed the classic "What'll I Do?" the instrumental "Mona Ray" and the song you opened the second set with by Hugh Prestwood (Briar Cone Pine?) Your voice and your guitar skills were as impressive as I remembered. Some things really need to be seen to be fully appreciated!

Perhaps the most memorable part of the night was talking to you between sets and being able to tell you in person how much your music has meant to me through the years. Your life on the road can not be an easy one, howener you leave a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to be able to spend an evening with your songs, stories, and guitar. The evening passed all too quickly at the Cafe Carpe. It was late in the evening, yet I was invigorated and felt capable of getting through the rest of a Midwest winter having spent this night with you, your audience and my family.

Although Chicago is no longer the home to The Earl of Old Town or Holsteins, there is still an audience here that would come out for you . We can't wait for that to happen.

So what were we doing driving all those miles from home?

Departures can also be reunions. With love, Jane Nix

The son of Mike Zwertschek (one of the founding Cincinnati Balladeers) He told us about a time Michael Johnson came to their house for a little jam session. They introduced me to MJ's music. The whole Zwertschek family are big fans! Mike's Uncle Rick, who lives in Los Angeles would make cassette tapes of MJ interviews off the radio and send them to Mike Z Jr. He, in turn, would make a copy for me. Cincinnati doesn't have much of a selection of MJ's music for sale. Anytime I've been out of town, I'd comb the used record shops for MJ's old albums. There aren't many out there. Thank You for starting this website so we can all have our very own recordings. Mike Jr. and I have always talked about how great it would be to have MJ over for dinner at one of our houses. So I'm going to ask right now. MJ if you are ever in the Philadelphia or the Cincinnati areas, and would like a good home cooked meal, give Mike or I a call. It would be an honor to meet you and chat in a comfortable setting.

Comments: Nice show Friday. It was a real thrill getting to open for you. I have a promised CD ready to send to you, but no snail mail address. The CD is by a Bay area guy named Jeff Linsky, who is just a phenomenal player. He uses a 3/4 size rubber string called a raquinto (sp?), and can seemingly play anything that occurs to him. Very musical, too, not a technician, for all his skills. Not deep, but makes up for it with an extra dose of smooth. I think you'll dig it. I discovered him back when I was working for Larrivée and had some disposable income. I bought a bunch of his CDs, figuring they were good wampum. If you feel like sending me something of yours in return, I don't mind. I already have "Departure".

Harvey Reid's email, in case you lost the matchbook cover you wrote it down on, is "harv@woodpecker.com". I also told him your updated email, so you may well hear from him.

Take care, and send me an address.

Comments: Hi Michael!

It was great to see you perform at the Funny Bone the other night. (My mother says, "Hi!" She's standing right behind me.) Did you hear that a South Dakota native was nominated for an Oscar for her short film? Next up, MY film! (Dream on, "for all you mad screenwriters".)

I'll try to make it to one of your upcoming concerts. The Minnesota Orchestra one in June sounds promising. I'd love to see you and Wynona in Myrtle Beach. I'm a huge Judds fan. A distant hope is that Naomi Judd would sponsor my one-act play about battered women that would tour high schools and colleges; I learned from her book that she was once spousally abused. Maybe you can mention it to her daughter or maybe you'll see Naomi at the local Nashville supermarket.

I'll finish that new screenplay, "Starving Artists", within the next couple of months and send it out to you.

Your truer than true friend,
Eddie Yaroch

We have loved his music and performances for many years, and never miss a show in our area. I'm Paula (Gould) Boesch's brother, and she would love to come see him again also. Please let us know how we could inquire about booking a show. Thank you.

Comments: I first found your music back when I was in high school. I was on my lunch break from my record store job and ran into a friend who was home from college. He asked if we had any of your records at the store. I didn't know, but when I went back from lunch I checked and decided to buy the only one we had left. Sorry Greg! Anyway, I have loved your music ever since. I saw you at St. Olaf and later in Minneapolis at one of your after Christmas gigs. Recently I have been fortunate enough to have been pushed into learning (as best I can) a few of your songs by my friend Anne (who wrote you January). I have learned so much from that process. I have also enjoyed reading your articles on performing. It helps to realise that everything we are going through is pretty much "normal". Especially when last week we were asked us if we wanted to start a tab on our bottled waters - I guess only tap water was free. Anyway, thanks for all the great music and inspiration. I look forward to seeing you at Uncle Calvins in March. Holly

Comments: Hey Michael,

I remember watching you at St. Olaf ...I was "wow"ed by your ability to play the guitar in the manner of Leo Kottke...(or even better). I think you played Mona Rae (Mona Roy?). Anyway, your hits are great. Your skill is great. You got great vocal skills.

Keep up the good work.

Comments: Fell for Michael's music long ago. Fell for Michael after a concert in Point State Park years ago. Best concert I've ever seen. Still talk about it. Wish there was new music to buy. Think he should be in the top 10. Thanks for letting me get that out.

Comments: I have seen you twice in Pensacola,Fl. The first time at the University of West Florida at a Catch A Rising Star concert. I fell in love with your music. The second time was at the Shriners Temple where you did some of your country music. I am not a country music fan, but I went just to here you. I have eight of your albums, but they are pretty wore out and I'm looking for cd to replace them. I see two of them are import from Japan.

Thanks for being out there and playing great music.

Comments: Thanks for sending me the "Ghost Earth" poem. I'm pleased to have produced some of your early shows in Fargo Moorhead - Remember when we let you park the van inside the fieldhouse because it was so cold you didn't think it would start after the show ? Now, how many guys would've let you do that ?

Wife and I absolutely still love the music. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for following your dreams, and creating such wonderful sounds.

Dan

Comments: Great web page! Great music!!!!! It is a crying shame that this world embraces people like Boy George, Michael Jackson, Prince, and all these other "artists" and lift them up so high that they become national icons when they trully can't carry a tune in a wood bucket. Sir, I desperately wish this world could become aware of you and your music. It is REAL music. It means something and it helps me. Thank you Mr. Johnson. From the hills of Arkansas, Shane Glidewell

Comments: Just found this site by chance searching and I'm glad I did. One of the first dates that my wife and I went on was to a Michael Johnson concert in 1982, back in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Just before our 15th anniversery, we were fortunate enough to see him in Colorado Springs, CO. All I can say is that I hope I'm still as good doing what I do as Michael Johnson is doing what he does. He is one of my favorites and I'm trying to get a concert venue I know to book him if he travels Colorado way. Thanks for the memories and emotions.

Comments: I first heard your music in the seventies, when I was first picking up a guitar. I was lucky enough to hear you live several times at Concordia College in Moorhead. Twenty five years later, your musicianship still enthralls me. I have learned more by listening to and imitating (or at least trying to imitate you!!) your albums than from anyone else. I am so glad to see the early recordings being released in the CD format. We've waited a long time. So when is the next new one due? Don't make us wait too long, and thanks for a lifetime of incredible music-making. Best wishes for continued success and PERSEVERANCE, Anne. PS Please let me know when you're going to be in the Lone Star State. Break a leg.
