I saw Michael for the first time in 2013 at the Katherine Hepburn Center in Old Saybrook Conn. The Kate is a small 250 seat theater, a wonderful place to see a show.
When we got to the theater people were standing in the lobby waiting for the doors to open. Michael was standing there as well talking to a couple of the people who work there.
After a few minutes Michael said to the people he was speaking with that he had to go get ready for the show. He turned to one of the employees and asked if it was okay to cut through the theater to get backstage. I was impressed at how humble and polite he was. He was a world class musician but was not impressed with himself as some in the music business can be.
I play finger style ukulele and was talking with Michael after the show. Jake Shimabukuro's name came up in our conversation. Jake is a virtuoso ukulele player from Hawaii. Michael had played a festival where Jake was also one of the performers. He had many nice things to say about Jake. Jake possesses that same humble, polite nature that Michael had. Two of the most gifted musicians I've ever heard and two of the nicest people as well.
