Comments: Dear Michael, my girlfriend and I met you at Second Chance Prom. You and I discussed your bypass and your trouble getting your wind back. You commented to my girlfriend, "I really seem to connect with this guy." We later discussed a song I had written and your offered to listen and review it for me. I have a crude MP3 recording, but wish to send it to your personal email address, which I do not see on your website. Could you please provide that for me and I'll take it from there. Thank you so much for the wonderful evening at the Marriott.
Hope to hear from you soon, Bill.

An old face looms up from the past. North High 1961-62. It fills my heart to the brim to know that you have had such a beautiful life doing what you were born to do.
When Bluer Than Blue came out, I was married and living in Santa Fe, NM and it came on the radio in the car. I pulled over and cried for my old friend and his wonderful voice. It was grouped with other songs and they never named the artists. I told my wife we had to go to the record store and find out. It just had to be you.
Thanks for the High School memories and the "Mike Johnson Trio" time. I am so pleased that if anyone of us was to have such success, it would be you. Kudos and Good For You!
Your Old Friend sends Love and Congradutions, long over due. Jerry Thomas

I am a long time fan of yours. I got your album as soon as it came out and i have been playing it ever since. You are so talented. Your amazing voice pleasures every female i have ever played you for and i cannot say that about any other musical artist in my enormous vinyl collection. Babes love you Michael, plain and simple ;-)
Your music is easy going, heartfelt and your lyrics are awesome.
My favorite is "Two in Love" which is playing right now from your LP, on a vintage Thoren's turntable from the 1970's with double Advent speakers (Henry Kloss). Your voice is beautiful with hers.
I felt compelled to say hello after all of these years.
Isn't the internet amazing?

I have thought about you hundreds of times over the years. I always hoped you stayed with your music, you were so good back in the old days and I bet you still are. It was nice to get the email from Jim Crigler about going to your concert last night.
Just a little update about me and my family. I have been married to the same lady, Merrilyn, for 43 years. Have two kids, a boy Scot and a gal, Kelly. We have three grand kids that keep us on the go all the time. Merrilyn is a Canadian so we have spend a lot of time in western Canada with her family. We travel to Mexico every year and last year we did a 16 day Mediterranean cruises, had a great time.
I talked to Marcia at the 25 class reunion and I said I would call her, but never did.
Anyway, if you have time send me a little note and maybe we can get together some time.I am retired and have lots of time to party.

I've been so looking forward to your Ann Arbor concert, but can't bring myself to go without my mom. We've gone together to the last two concerts you've given there, but she's recently moved out of state. She's been a fan of yours for quite some time, and I grew up listening to your records. I even went to a concert you gave in Lapeer, MI in the 80s, when I was very small. I hope you return again to Michigan, and that I'll be able to come see you. Thank you for putting on such wonderful shows, with such a great atmosphere.

Comments: Michael!
Just sitting here on a winter's day...on youtube...listening to your fantastic version of 'I Can't Get To You From Here' that you did on Ch. 2 tv back in the '80s! I HAD NEVER HEARD YOU DO THAT SONG AND IT BLEW ME AWAY!!!!!!! I have several of your lps/cds and for some reason it is not on there or I've been distracted when it was! So...I hunted up the lyrics..Don Gibson...and now am going to learn that song so I can play it with the others of yours I can play...ie. 'Rooty','May Ya Never','Damn It All','On The Road',....etc. I play them w/the E lowered to a D. Love that simple tuning..for the pedal tone. I won't get the guitar part down on this new one...like yours, but it will be passable!
I saw you at Excelsior in the little bar about a year ago. I was the guy who introduced you that night. What fun! Got a real hoot when you looked at me and said..."Thanks, Dad!!" Crowd loved it and so did I...but I don't think I'm old enough to be your dad!!!
Thanks for all you do...and I pray you are back 100% from the heart thing!!
God Loves you and so do we....your many fans.
Jim

Comments: Dear Micheal,
I have always loved to hear you sing and play. During the late 1980's I was separated, by my choice, from my family. I was watching mtv one night and your video of "That's that" came on. By the time the woman in the video placed the hat on the little girl, I was almost in tears. It reminded me of what I had left behind, a wife and a little daughter. I finally came to my senses, moved back home, and got my family back. My wife, Debbie, passed away about seven years ago from complications associated with cancer, but not before giving me two more wonderful children.
I've just recently lost my girl-friend, Lulie, to C.O.P.D who passed away at Thanksgiving. I thought about that song "That's that" and I've been listening to it for the last few days. It has meant so much to me and I thought I would let you know how much I appreciate you and your music.
Sincerely Yours,
Tadd

Comments: Hi, Michael.
I'm very sorry to hear you're not feeling well.
Thought it might pass an idle moment or two if I asked the following question.
I am a young singer/songwriter, intending to make a career out of playing my music for people. Is there any advice you can give that would help me at this early stage in his career? Things you wish you knew way back when?
You have built a following of such avid followers, and such a broad body of respected work, I wonder if there's anything you'd recommend I focus on - whether from the musical, performance, or business sides of things.
I'd welcome any thoughts you might have.
Here's to a speedy recovery!

Comments: I had the great pleasure of working with Michael a decade or two ago. In the early 80's I was Music Director for the Dinah Shore Show - and, as a big fan, managed to get a booking for him on her show. We rehearsed three numbers - including a duet with Dinah - at her house in Malibu - she cooked us lunch btw. and she thoroughly enjoyed their time together. The other day while assembling music for my iPod I decided to include five of his albums and upon re-hearing I once again realized how much Michael's music has been a part of the landscape of my life.
I'll quit before this sounds like a eulogy. But thanks, Michael for the many hours of pleasure your talent has created. Cheers.

After I met you at the Indian cuisine buffet in Nashville. I went home and called my husband to tell him how thrilled I was that I got to meet you. I started singing him your songs to remind him how much he loved your music. Then to play one for him I popped open my one gig MP3 player/flash drive that I'd brought from home. In it I found 168 Amy Jo originals and about 30 of my very favorite songs that I had dropped in there for the flight. Out of 30 songs... 5 of them were yours! I'd say I kind of like your stuff.
Big hugs
Amy Jo
PS Thank you for saying you'd enjoy writing with me someday. It made my day, no week, NO it was the thrill of a lifetime.

Comments: I just want to say thank you. Thank you for your music. Sometimes we can wonder if our lives have mattered, or if we have done anything for the good of mankind. Well, I don't know about anyone else, but you have helped a skinny little red haired girl get through some really trying times. Your music has comforted me, mourned with me, cheered me, and allowed me to really examine life. Maybe you didn't mean for your music to do all of that, but some of the most significant contributions in life are accidental. I lost my mother when I was 16, and your music comforted me...I am now 49 and 3/4 and lost my son to suicide two years ago(on my birthday), I again returned to your music to help me sort and examine things. As I said earlier, even if you didn't mean to - you helped a sister out. I met you twice and always wished I could adequately express my thanks to you...so for a third time, in writing, I again attempt to say, "Thank you." Thank you for helping me out during the course of my life.

I do believe that was after a concert you gave at the college in ST Peter, MN back in `93 or `94. Remember? We tried to find my son, Jeff Barnett, who you so inspired, but we couldn't locate him. My son is now a musician & a trained Lutherie. You use to refer to me as the most beautiful person you had ever met. We first met back in `81 or was it `82, after People's Fair in Mankato at a dinner called, Maggies. You invited me & my son to watch you jam with a local band. You let my son accompany you playing the tambourine. Well anyways, I hope all is well & you are continuing to create beautiful music!

So sorry to learn about your recent surgery but glad to hear you've survived it. Please know that the standard period of depression that usually follows such a traumatic event, passes. I have never experienced heart surgery myself, but I have come through some pretty rough clinical depression and the key is to always keep your guitar tuned and the nails trimmed.
Hang in there my old friend. Remember the Mai Tai . . .
Hang in there old crooner. . .

Comments: Hi Michael, not long after I graduated from high school I was driving alone one evening listening to the radio, returning home from a party where my ex was with his new girl, when the DJ announced a new song from Michael Johnson and "Bluer Than Blue" came on. I cried through the whole thing but it became my favorite. And I became a fan. Thank you for your music and especially the song that, after all these years, is still so strong in my heart.

Haven't seen you around and wondering if you are still playing or if that you maybe with a band now. We enjoyed the time that you played for our group here in Watertown. The group called Friends of Acoustic and Blues is still going strong with 4 or so concerts a year. You may remember coming to my house for dinner the night before.
Well, hope all is well and we may be interested in getting you back if you are still in the business. Let me know.

Comments: I can't remember the first time I saw Michael perform live, but I do remember pickin' up the lp "There Is A Breeze" & being blown away. While in college (early 70s), when I came to be in charge of our campus newsletter the first thing I did was to book Michael for a campus performance. Not many showed up, but I LOVED every minute of it. ...Jump to a couple of months ago in Fergus Falls & seeing him once again, brought back so many memories & reminded me why, for my money, he's the best. I'm so glad he hasn't faded to "Blue" & become an answer to "whatever happened to..." I've followed his diverse career since the beginning & have never been disappointed. Thanks, Michael & keep tearing down those obstacles & drive on. Oh, yes and please, my friend, knock off the ciggies. I anticipate following you for many years into the future, but you've got to do your part. After all, isn't it about ME (heh, heh). I wish you peace, my brother.

First of all, congratulations on your new grandson! Babies are such a treasure. Enjoy as much time with him as you can get.
Just wanted to let you know that Lugs O. passed away in January at 92 years old. The memorial service was last Saturday--lots of neighbors from the past were there and your name came up a couple of times. It's the end of an era for the neighborhood; Lugs had lived in that house for 51 years.
Thanks for stopping by to see my mom when you were in Minnesota. She is always glad to see you. Drop by again when you're in town.
Greet Stan and Leo, and give the baby a hug. And take care of yourself too. We hope to see you in concert around here soon.

Comments: Dear Michael,
First of all i feel a bit embarrassed that i have never heard any of your other tunes. In 1978 when Bluer then Blue came out it was played quite regularly in New Jersey especially by a radio station called WMGQ in somerset or New Brunswick area of New Jersey. After i broke up with a girl your song would bring tears to my eyes and certainly tugged at my heart strings. The lyrics and Music are absolutely Perfect together and of course i would never want to hear anyone else sing that song but you! Your version with your own backing vocals is superb, to say the very least.I wonder if this song "Bluer Then Blue" was written from a personal loss or perhaps someone that you broke up with along the line? Most of my best songs come from personal feelings and divine inspiration. I'd rather write ten great hits then to fall prey to mediocrity just to write songs. One of my songs "a soldiers song" was recorded in July of 2005 by The United States Army Concert Orchestra "Pershings Own" that plays for the president and dignitaries and heads of state. This piece was inspired by a young 20 year old soldier from Clark New Jersey who was also a classmate of my daughter's. When we got the news that a good kid from clark nj was shot in the neck while attempting to rescue his fellow soldiers that were pinned down, it was too close to home and i had already been working on a tune for what i thought would be a love song. Well it became a different type of love song. One that honors all of our brave men and women that fight for our freedom in these very troubled times. My web site is myspace.com/thomasmezzo and taxi.com/tommezzo where you can hear fully orchestrated pieces that i have finished in the last 5 or 6 years. My latest piece is titled "I have waited just for you". I hope that it finds it's way into a motion picture. Anyhow i just wondered if you wrote the string parts for "Bluer then Blue". They really are a superb arrangement that compliments your singing and playing perfectly! Also was that you playing the Piano in the opening sequence of this wonderful song?
Anyhow I will always love "Bluer then Blue" and admire and respect you as a fellow composer and songwriter for writing this delightful piece.
I wish you and your family all the best of God's good blessings.
Best
Thomas

Comments: Michael,
Hope you are well.
In the early 1970s, you played at a sort of private concert, along with a few other artists, in the ballroom of the student union at what was then called Central Missouri State College. The concert was for student union people from various colleges in the area. I crashed it.
At the time, I thought I'd never seen you before, but I was very impressed by your singing and guitar playing. (I remember that Brewer and Shipley were also there, and maybe Josh White, and a couple of comedians, and I can't remember who else.) I had the opportunity to talk to you afterward, but passed. But if I remembered where I'd seen you before, I would have loved to talk to you. You did a song the Mitchell Trio recorded, "Business Goes on as Usual," and that should have given me a clue.
I wrote a term paper for my U.S. Social History class on the Chad Mitchell Trio. The group is still my favorite all-time group. One day, on Michael Douglas's show, I think, I saw you with John Denver and David Boise, still billed as the Mitchell Trio. I had read that when Mike Kobluk left the group, Mitchell's name could no longer be used. I also read that Denver, Boise, and Johnson recorded one album for Reprise but it was never released. (I've read conflicting things about the trio.)
At any rate, I'm not sure why, after all these years I decided to tell you my little story. But I really regret not talking to you all those years ago. I was also wondering if you ever had any contact with John Denver in the years after the trio disbanded.
Best wishes.

It is so great to see how well you look and how well you sound, considering the last couple of years! You have returned to that magnificent continence and voice that I have held so dear in my mind for over 35 years! Listening to you sing with Donna at the studio and getting a chance to fool around on a bass violin with you and also to sing with you just made a sweet night even sweeter. Please, come back to Chicagoland, even if it's just to pass through to another destination. You are sorely missed in this deprived and depraved town! So, remember, always keep your head down when dealing with gun slinging club owners, even if it was just a pearl handled Baretta pea shooter, an experience we both have shared at the same venue!!!!!!

I didn't have a record player that worked and then I found this rinky dink record player for $9 at Bargain Seeker. It's not top of the line quality, but you even sound good on my $9 record player.

I have been a fan of yours since 1977, when I was a senior in high school. A dear friend introduced me to your music and your voice and songs have pulled me through many nights. Now that I'm more grown-ed up, your lyrics still make sense to me.
I am now living in Kuwait and read on your website that you will be in Fergus Falls MN next week, and alas, my second opportunity to see you is missed because I'm here!! (My home is 25 miles from Fergus Falls)
Alas, guess that's life!
Anyway, from a long time fan, I am glad that your health is well, glad that you're sounding very, very fine (I just listened to the Musicians Underinsured health podcast) and I hope you enjoy Otter Tail County.
Keep on singing and I'll keep on listening

after 44 yrs in the house, my Mom moved...and you can imagine the amount of...um...stuff? a person (ok, and 3 kids) accumulates in 44 yrs. The stuff she moved twice (up to Duluth and back) was funny -- she never opened the boxes when we moved back in 1971! I was tasked with "getting rid" of various things - including crates and piles of record albums. I was sorting them into "Classical," "Pop/Rock," and "Where did this come from?!" And in this miasma of unadulterated crap I found a gem -- "Dialogue" By Michael Johnson -- the cover disappeared over the years, but someone put it in a plastic protector.
I no longer have a turn-table -- he got that and a bunch of my favorite power tools in the divorce -- but if anyone would appreciate this, please shoot me an email. I'll ship it to anyone who appreciates your music as much as many of us in this great state do.
Just downloaded one of your live albums - great listening in digital!
thx

Just like someone who sent in a message back in July (Tim Grimes), we kept hoping you'd show up in Atlanta or in the vicinity...please come soon, or my wife and I will be back in Central Florida.
Maybe the only way I can see and hear you again, is to time a trip home to the Twin Cites just right, or start booking you into venues in Georgia and or Florida. We will keep trying to catch you in concert, and please don't forget about your fans in the SE.

Comments: Michael, think way back to Boothbay summer of '64, and a few chance meetings in MD and Breck... Are you ever to be performing on the East Coast? Unlike the first time you were here, Frederick is NOW a very active Arts community with many venues for singer-songwriters, poet-writers and artists alike. Being alone now I concentrate my time in jaming with friends (the Martin guitar has been put aside (briefly) for intense private conversations with new (old) hammer dulcimer),
writing and fine arts... mostly sea and waterscapes in aqua medias ala Herb Maynard... Annual summer visits to Maine's coastline renew my spirit and refresh my soul. Have you lately made the pilgrimage?
I would love to hear from you if you ever have a free moment and would enjoy seeing you once again if you are ever East.
Take care, stay well, and most of all don't age. I am still nineteen...at least at heart and in spirit.

What a delight to be surprised by your guest appearance onstage with Nancy @ the Arrington Vineyard last evening! Hearing that treasured tune brought a huge smile to my face....I was wishing on a star that you'd be singing a verse.....but, alas. THX! for taking a moment to stop & let me chat with you. And "THANK YOU", again, for sharing your talent and your spirit over the years. You make my heart swell with joy.

Comments: I entered a CMT Country Songwriting contest a few years back. The song was rejected because it wasn't country enough and I didn't win,(didn't REALLY expect to), but one of the judges wrote back saying the song had a Michael Johnson feel to it. After listening to your vast repertoire of beautiful music, I think I was a winner for the comparison.

Loved your music from Bluer than Blue on. Lucked into picking up a copy of Departure and found so many gems on that disc. Then found some of your later -- more country -- stuff on the 1978-95 disc -- and can't wait to hear it live.
I started playing at age 39 (nine years ago) but so much of your stuff is well beyond us intermediates. Though I'm still trying.

My dad was on the Opry for several years and my sister and brother-in-law are involved in Blue Grass, but the musical genes passed me by. I did enjoy the cd and do want to apologize profusely for not being more current in music. Thanks for the music.

I'm so disappointed that I have to miss your benefit concert on Sunday! I was excited when I first saw the date, but events have transpired such that I remain on crutches (after 12 mos, you'd think I could figure out walking), and now they're talking about putting me back into the chair. As a single woman on crutches, going down to warehouse district is simply not an option -- personal safety has to come first (how do you think I got in this shape in the first place!!)
Have an awesome concert, and know there are many, many more who are present in mind and spirit!
God Bless!

Comments: Hi Michael,
It is April 18 and I have just gotten on your site for the first time in a long time. I was just thinking about you the other day and I hadn't heard anything about your illness and surgery until yesterday. I am saddened to hear of them and I pray that your recovery will continue and you get stronger all the time. Your music has been very dear to me for the last 30 years.Over the 30 years since I was in high school my musical tastes have changed a lot, but your music has been a constant and I enjoy it more all the time. You are so comforting to listen to in our challenging world. And my son who is autistic and can be very frightened and tense, is calmed and steadied when he hears your CDs. Around my last year of high school, 1978 was when I first knew of you and hearing your songs. I have For All You Mad Musicians on LP (Sanskrit) and it is one of my valued possessions; when I play it I feel like you are giving your concert right in my home. I got to see many of your after-Christmas concerts in the late 80s to mid 90s and they were my birthday present since my bday is Dec. 27. I just treasured and enjoyed your concerts. I also enjoyed hearing about your boys growing up every year and I could relate to your stories since my kids were around the same age. Thanks for all the beautiful songs and sharing your talent and your heart with us your faithful fans. I am sorry times have been tough for you, and you will be in my prayers. Thank you too for the blog you write, I appreciate the chance to catch up on what has been going on with you. I look forward to you being here in MN for the state fair this year. God bless you, Michael.

I am home on leave from work after surgery myself and am seeing recuperation from a different angle than a nurse and it does humble one. It takes some time to get the inner courage to take those steps out of the cocoon we have had to live in while recuperating. Being home has allowed me to discover your web site and after years and years of saying to myself "I really want to get to one of his concerts" I am finally planning on doing so when you come to Zumbrota and am hoping to get to the benefit concert. Your music has touched many hearts and seen many through tough times. The time now is to give back to you. Thank you Again. Cindy

Been a casual guitar player for just as long, learned most of what I know wearing out vinyl, C90 tapes and CD's trying to figure out how the heck you could *do* that. Just did a halfway credible version of "One Mile Apart" with a friend for my church based on the Bluebird recording (and a chart posted on the web by Lisa Aschmann).
Occasionally, not often, loop back to your website, and just read about the bypass surgery. Won't make it to the benefit concert later this month, but glad to hear you'll be playing some in it yourself (and you're touring again, great!). Since I can't make it, I donated a bit at the "friends of" website. I owe you much more.

On another note, do you have any plans to return to MN (Mpls area)in the near future? Hope to hear from you soon. Take Good Care Melisse

Comments: Wow! I was a bit shocked today to read the account of the heart operation. Needless to say, I hadn't visited the site for several months. I'm very happy to hear that things went well and it's back to performing again. My wife and I were at the last two St. Cloud (MN)concerts and saw several of the Orchestra Hall (Minneapolis)shows back in the 80's. Through the concerts and recordings, we've always felt a special connection to Michael, although we've never really met him. And we still think of him as a Minnesota expatriate :-)

Comments: I had a chance to see Mr. Johnson in the late '80s in Watertown, SD. It was one of the most memorable nights. I have been to many concerts in my life, but that one still stands as the most memorable. It was an intimate atmosphere. And he was great.
I pray for a speedy recovery so I might again have a chance to see him play. I have the vinyl 'There is a Breeze' still to this day.
Get well soon.

In 1991 I was 17 years old. I was abused by my Mother. I had to stay in the basement, I was not allowed out unless she told me to. There was a radio down there and it was always turned on because she did not want me to hear family conversations. It was on WILQ country music, (when country was not cool. haha) It always drove me a little nuts. However, the day came when a friend of mine told me her parents said I could come live with them. I wrote my mother and my stepfather each a letter explaining how we all know that things are not as they should be. There was a good Christian family that would let me come stay with them. Walking up those basement steps to hand over the letters was one of the most difficult things I ever had to do, but I saw no choice, I was either going to die at the hands of my mother, or I would do her the favor and eventually do it myself. As my story goes it was not a smooth, "Sure go live with strangers," but eventually she allowed me to go. I was so excited to find the author of the song that played a VERY important part of my courage and reason to get out of there. My mother must have allowed those words to penetrate her stone heart. The last line of that letter to my Mother, so many years ago was, .....a bird in a cage will forget how to sing, if you love me, give me wings.
I have been flying nonstop since the day she let me go, I'm ainging my own song now and have a husband whom I love and five beautiful children that tickle my soul, my poor Mom missed out on so much joy.
I am planning on writing my story, and hopefully publishing it. Do you mind if I mention Michaels name? The song, at least that paticular line is a very important element to my story.
I would love to hear from you, and hopefully Michael could read this and know because of a few words he put in a song, gave a young girl courage to do what she needed to do to fight to survive. I'm so happy to have tinkered around on the web today while my babies napped and found who sang the song that wove hope and determination into my life. Thank-you Mr. Johnson. Sincerely, Camille Hollenbaugh

I want to thank you for taking the time to sign our "old" record albums last night at Crossings in Zumbrota, MN. Your music has been a big part of our lives. We first saw you at the community college in Rochester, MN when we were dating back in 1973. We have listened to your music, often, over the years, and have never had the opportunity to experience "it or you" close up, as we did last night. Thank you!! We are so sorry to hear about your heart surgery and hope all is going well with your recovery. We played your 2-disc CD on the way home and both sang along all the way! Mark likes to sing along at full voice, and he does a pretty good job, although it gets in the way of hearing your voice!! The intimate setting at Crossroads was so awesome! To be able to experience your guitar playing up so close was unbelievable!!
Thank you, again, for signing our record albums and taking the time to come back home to MinnesOOOta!!
Merry Christmas, Michael, and Happy New Year!!

Comments: Hi Michael---Just heard "Bluer than Blue" on the radio, and immediatly had to tell my wife how it is that I know of this super singer/guitarist. Do you remember, a long time ago, I put in an exposed aggregate sidewalk for you at your Mtka. home, and you said "now that I've watched you work for a couple days, why don't you come down and watch me work." You gave me 4 (front row) tickets to the Carlton as you were the warmup for Three Dog Night, which had just gotten back together. Well, it looks like, all these years later, we're both still doing the same thing. Sorry to hear about your health issues, but it sounds like your doing fine. I know it doesn't always seem like it, but God never gives us more than we can handle. Well, take care, and I hope to catch one of your performances in the near future. Bob

Over the years I've had good laughs with other Michael Johnson's I've met because we seem to get into the strangest predicaments because of the name we share. I always remind them of you; and, that anyone who listened to the radio then heard your popular tunes, and so people we all respectively knew wouldn't forget us! I really enjoyed singing along with them and now hope to find them on karaoke. (I see availability on a site I look at for that...good deal!)
I was sorry that duet you did with Allison Kruase didn't take off; I enjoyed it.

Once upon a time I was driving down the road listening to a country station out of Austin and a song came on the radio about a fellow who was my age, or thereabouts, and still falling in love with his wife (the moon still shines on her shoulder). Well, I had to pull over and have a good cry. I was truly moved. I called the radio station and asked who the artist was and I've never forgotten your name.
The only other song that every moved me like that, was a B.B. King recording, a duet with Gladys Knight, of an old song entitled "Please send me someone to love.

Comments: Michael,
I should have acted on my intuition earlier. I've been thinking about you and want to know (along with Dick Wilson, jut got off the phone with him and asked about you) how you are doing.
How are you?
What is new in your life since surgery?
Are coming to the north country anytime soon?
Anything we can do for you?
My friend Laurie has a family farm near Rochester, sits along Lake Zumbro and if you'd like to come and relax and walk along the tree-lined lane, spend a night or two or more, I'll make the arrangements on this end. Laurie's mom, Lois still lives there, but we go down nearly every weekend to care take and stay in the horse barn that was converted to living quarters about thirty years ago. We're riding Harley's there today with a long-time pastor friend of mine.
Been a tough summer for ol Neon Parrot, little, to no business, had all my broadcast equipment stolen when someone broke into the house while in Seattle, but I'm still on this side of the grass. And that's good. I'm really beginning to walk in the realm of abundance rather than scarcity and amazingly things are falling into place. Maybe I shouldn't be sooo amazed huh? Just signed an agreement to market a beautiful new book about the North Shore by Craig Blacklock.
Gotta run.
Be well,
James

Comments: Hello Michael,
First, I'm sorry to hear about what you will be going through and I wish you the very best. You've heard all the stories so, while any surgery has risks, it's not nearly as risky as when your uncle had the quad.
You probably won't remember me. A few years ago, I attended your show in Cedarburg, WI. We both stepped outside to have a smoke and had a couple of nice chats. I felt we had a lot in common. It was a pleasure talking with you and sharing some similar music stories and "sick" humor. I was born in July of '48 so as I recall, you were considerably older than me...or something. I told you at the time that I too am a singer/songwriter/guitarist and you were kind enough to offer to give a listen to some of my songs. I don't know how it happened, but I lost your card with your phone number and email address and I was too embarrassed to admit this to you so I didn't...and obviously, I didn't try to resume contact...until now...when you're facing heart surgery. Sheesh...what a heartless opportunistic bastard!
Anyway, that said, I have many songs that I've written and a handful of them have solid commercial potential. I have one song (Durango) that's signed with Bronson at Al Jolson Black & White Music there in Nashville.
I'm asking, when you're up to it, would you take a little time to listen to a couple of my songs to see if we might have anything in common? What's posted is intended to be more of a cross section of the styles I can work in more than showing off my most commercial songs as the site where they are posted is our advertising/marketing site and most of our business is geared toward industry. The links are as follows:
http://www.rightangleconcepts.com/RA/Durango.html
http://www.rightangleconcepts.com/RA/MoreMusic.html

If you should have any interest in listening to more, please let me know.
Thanks in advance Michael and I wish for the very best for you with your upcoming ordeal.
Sincerely,
Greg Everett

I'm an adoring fan, have all your CD's, and have attended countless performances. I just logged onto your website to confirm what time you were performing at the TPT anniversary celebration we are planning to attend tomorrow (8/4/07) in St. Paul. I was stunned by the cancelations and very bare-bones performance schedule which is usually quite extensive. Concerned, I found your monologue regarding the bypass surgery coming up. Just wanted you to know that we will be praying for you and look forward to seeing you perform again soon. Keep your sense of humor -- it will definitely help you navigate the difficult road ahead.
Warm Regards,

Comments: Michael,
The Holy Family Class of 1962 is having a reunion! We will have a casual gathering at the Holy Family Church for Mass on Saturday, August 11th and an extended Lunch Buffet on Sunday afternoon, August 12th. All former classmates are invited.
I was looking at the Vista of 1959 and there you are on our freshman cover page. Wow, what a load of books you re holding!
Yep, it has been 49 years since that picture was taken and we have all changed. But, it is fun and worthwhile to reflect back on our roots and those classmates that influenced our development.
I saw where one time you said that you were asked to leave Holy Family, translation, kicked out , because of some infamous violation! Well, I haven t spoken to anyone that remembers such an event, but then again, I haven't spoken to everyone either. I mean, not that it didn t happen, but :0)
Certainly, most of us were sorry to have you and others depart for North High School and most of us had no idea why. Personally, I always thought you left because they had gymnastics and that was your sport!
Anyway, Cindy Persichette asked in her trivia questions, just how many professional musicians we had in our class. It is an interesting question and it is more than any of us could have imagined would come from such a relatively small group of students.
The Reunion should be a nice gathering and all of your former classmates would enjoy seeing you.
Bob DeAndrea has set up a web page with details and other items of interest at: hfclassof62.info
Everyone would love to see you, Michael.

Comments: Michael,
This is a long-overdue thanks for your class and concert in Hibbing. I enjoyed sharing my song, "A Little at a Time" with you. Reading "Perseverance" just reminded me that the main reason I write is because I have to, for the love the craft. I do not believe I will be one of the few that see their songs go into production (I do not have the perseverance for it). If not for the love of the music itself, the writing would therefore be very frustrating. But the music is its own reward. If others like it, it is very gratifying. But if I like it, it is wonderful, even if I am the only one holding that opinion.
Again, thanks for visiting Hibbing.

Comments: Hi Michael.
I've thought of you as a friend of mine since we started talking back in the Jericho Harp days. I gave you my Cd in the spirit of that feeling I had. I am hoping now that I didn't presume too much, as i certainly didn't mean to impose myself on you. It just didn't occur to me that you and I might not still be friends when I gave you the CD.
After hearing your concert, and reading your article on "Perseverence" I think the idea I had that we're still friends is even more true now. Of course, the preceding ideas are just words. However, if you have the time and desire to listen, I'm hoping the songs on my CD will convince you that we are playing on the same team, if not quite the same ball parks, . (You might like "Small Flame Burning" and "Take My Hand." Jim Thomas was thinking of doing "Take My Hand" when he and Tom were still together. Of course, they both got "real" jobs, and I'm the one still writing. And my dad still asks me when I'm going to get a "real" job?)
I know I perservere in many of the same ways you do. I was glad i brought the song I did to the class in Hibbing, as you and some of the other class members helped me identify both the problems with the song, and the goal I was going for in the song. Getting an objective point of view is sometimes necessary for me, as I sometimes am just too close to the songs, though that is probably not as true as it used to be.
I don't know if you're familiar with the writings of Hugh Prather, but one thing he wrote seems connected to your article on perserverence. "He wrote, "Given the alternatives we (have learned to) allow ourselves, we always do what we want." When we become aware of that fact, discipline ceases to be a problem.
When I saw you perform in Hibbing, I saw a person who I thought was trying to find his way back to his path, and who was very close to succeeding. It was as if a lot of things have conspired to take you away from that direction, as you mentioned in the article on perserverence. It felt like you were going in the right direction.
I wanted to tell all these things in Hibbing, but you were preoccupied. To me, that was also what you were talking about in "perserverence." You have been "preoccupied" in the past, with things that didn't really connect with the heart and soul of who you are. Been there - done that. Still go there too many times. Survival demands a lot of me, but probably less than what I give it. Sometimes, as Bob Franke put it, we just have to tell the internal critic to shut up and go back to it's corner.
Anyway, I wanted to let you know that I was glad to touch base with you again after such a long time of not seeing or speaking with you, and very glad to know that the "seeker" is still in there seeking. I know that one very well. I can never fully rest with the seeker still affecting me. If we end up in the same nursing home, and we're not both alzheimer's patients, it could lead to interesting times. Take care... gb

I did see you once in concert in the 80's and I believe it was at Arrowhead Pond in Anahiem, Calif.
If you ever have a concert in southern California please email and let me know.
Sincerely,
Linda

Comments: Michael, I have enjoyed your music for many moons now! I "caught up with you" when you recorded Wings with Don. He has always been my "idol", as I lived near his Music Room for years and always thought I would end up with him, as our lives had run a rather parallel course for some years, divorce, remarriage, "screwed up" years, etc. However, I now know that I was just yearning to be a musician in parallel with all of you in love with music!!! I now live in WA and love the Columbia River Gorge with such passion! Painting in my studio and watching the sunshine days pass by with great leisure!
I just wanted you to know how much your songs have meant to me throughout my 67 years of life! You brought me through my years of watching my dad die with your son Ponies! It gave me such courage to listen to the lyrics. The Wings recording was meaningful for me, as I gave Don an airplane as a Xmas present once, knowing intuitively that had needed to leave Rochester for more fertile fields. Alas, he did and met the Judds!
A history lesson in itself.
I congratulate you for living your dream, staying under the radar with your celebrity and enjoying the pleasures that God gave you. You represent the best of the best! Thanks for your serenity throughout the years. My hat is off to you, Michael.
I only wish we could have known each other, as we are on the same "page" with the meaning of life and simplicity

Comments: Hello Michael,
Will try this again after many years...
Era of your music: That's That
When: 1988/89 (hmmm???)
Where: A pokey little town north of Tucson called Catalina. In a hick bar called The Lariat (which for some reason would get fairly big names in to perform.)
Met you there, loved your music. Then met you again in Scottsdale, at another bar type situation, but you were playing solo.
Later...I moved to PA. Saw you play in Baltimore, MD (at a mall event, which you detested) and spent some time at the Inner Harbor.
Since then...took your advice and ditched the bum I was involved with, married a great guy and became the homeschooling mother of two fabulous kids. Then I moved back to said pokey town of Catalina. Who knew?
Wishing: You would make your way to Arizona as I would love to hear you perform in person again. Your voice is beautiful. Be in touch if memory serves you...
Many blessings to you and yours,
Jaimie

Comments: Hi Michael,
It's been a while since we "howdied" - last year at Manitou Springs, if memory serves.
You were kind enough sometime back to send me the lyrics for "You Make Me Feel So-So". I know at that time you had not recorded it. I've recently started doing a radio show, a half hour slot featuring humorous music from the "folk era". While not exactly FROM that era, I think "...So-So" would be a scream to play. Is there any way to access that song? Do you have it available on any sound files?
The show is live at 5:30 AM on Tuesdays, Mountain Time. (I'm not entirely certain that I'M alive at that hour, but......). We're calling it "Folk Era Lite", and it'll stream on the station's website, www.krfcfm.org.
If there's any shot at getting "...So-So", please let me know. It'd be perfect.
Hope to see you in Manitou again.
Thanks,
Zach Kaplan

Comments: I would very much like to know why I can't get a hold of the sheet music,(or any guitar chords/tabs for that matter), for This Night Won't Last Forever. It's a beautiful song, and it is a shame that the world can't share in knnowing exactly how to play it. Moreover, it seems odd to me, that even if I cannot get sheet music for this song, that no one on the internet would post at least one guitar chord/tab for this beautiful song. Because I love this song so much, I would very much appreciate it if you would reply to this query. Thanks and have a good day!

Dear Michael:
I have just read Thoughts on Perseverance and am now sitting here in tears, hoping I do not short out my keyboard! Okay, so I am how many years behind the curve? Your points hit home so hard, sort of like the kiss of a wet fist after a neatly thrown right cross. Here comes the explanation:
When last we met, it was about 1974. I was engaged to be married to a nice Jewish American Princess (herein, referred to as JAP!) From Septmeber until the end of the year, wedding was all I did! So, I was temporarily lost to the Lincoln Ave regulars with theexception of occasional sneak out nights. Performing ended after marriage except at home, which was cool. The JAP and I would occasionally sing together and even appeared as a duo for a while. What followed was the wonderlust that the musicina feels when the chains of relationship titghten around one's neck and musical life is curtailed.
When the opportunity to record with The Redhead band surfaced in 1975-76, I jumped. This immediately started the dwonhill trek into separation in 1978 and divorce in 1980, whereupon I remarried immediately. This too ended in divorce after 2 1/2 years of producing sound for concerts and wrking for Guitar Center as a salesman and manager. Never home so 2nd wife took to sleeping with her boss and screwing up HIS family as well. Next victim---Diane, aged 28 to my 40 when we met. She knew of my mucial activites and initially was okay with it. However, she wanted something more and I had to choose between not knowing when the next date was and having a permanent job and a relationship with someone I really cared about. I chose the latter.. Operative word CHOICE.
I lost Diane on 12/31/04 to a pulmonary embolism---sudden and in 95% of occurences, fatal. She was the light of my life. However, I found out that when one light extinguishes, it does not take long for another to ignite. In this case, it was an old "flame", but not really aperson. Well, maybe itwas a person---Tom Dundee, to be exact. He trekked out from Chicago in an ice storm to give me personal support at a wake that should never have taken place. HAVIng a friend like Tom there gave me added strength to get through those hours and days. He insited tha Icome to a conert he was doing that Saturday night. When I went, it was like a cathartic injection of spirit. Since then, I have been determined to rekindle my solo performance career. n the 20 years that Di and I were together, I hardly picked up my guitar. It suffered as much as I did, needing a great deal of repair AND a neck reset.
As I am sure you are aware of, we have suffered losses in the community. Steve Godman, Mike Jordan adn most recently Fred Holstein and Ray Nordstrand. Each of these deaths struck me quite heavily, but do not compare to the loss of one's life partner. Di was a "disco girl", not at all interested in the folk community. Yet she loved folks like Tom and Jim Post, Reilley and Maloney from the West Coast, and even tolerated Fred and Earl! She tried to protect me from upsetting episodes fo these types of events. I miss her terribly. But, with her passing, with he extinguishing of her light, the glow fo the music returned, my old flame.
Since February, 2005, I have been playing all kinds of music, from traditonal folk, contemporary folk, singer/songwriter products, classic country, contemporary country, even some songs from musical productions that I have appeared in. I have even gone so far as to find some pop tunes that are classics---Sittin on the Dock of the Bay, for instance. In the summer of 2005, I started hitting the open stages to get my legs back. I have done lots of that recently.
Most recent was last night at the Old Town School of FOlk (Fake) Music. If you remember what it was like, you will not recognize. (More on that another time) It was a true kick to stand on their stage and perform "On the Road" for the first time in 33 years. As I have been noticing, certain songs just seem to flow out of me---this was one of them. It was an uniquely special moment for me.
If it wasn't for the perseverance, not only of purpose, but also of spirit, I would probably have killed myself already. As you pointed out, quitting is not an option. I, too, will go out in a blaze of glory, playing my guitar as hard as I can while drawing my last breath. I have missed the muse long enough. And now, I have confirmation that I am right---so fucking unbelievably right, in the choice to come back, as it were. Agin, theoperative word here is CHOICE! Thank you for making the choice more than just obvious.
And as for Bubba, well to quote the great Chicago philospher, Earl J. J. Pionke, "Fuck 'em! Get the money!"
Much love to you, Michael, and thanks for the support!
Your old friend,
Norm "Maddawg" Siegel

About 15 years ago, I spoke w/you about performing at my wedding! Your nephew, Chris, was an intern in audiology at the time here in Colorado. He put me in touch with you, but alas, you had a commitment in Switzerland (?) I believe.
At any rate, have you ever had the chance to play with keyboardist John Jarvis? He's a fellow Nashville-based artist with what seems to be a similar musical sensibility. I could imagine a great musical synergy between the two of you.
Love to know if a Colorado date is within the realm of possibility.

Comments: I have been a fan ever since hearing your Dialogue and Michael Johnson albums, given to me by a guitarist in a band I was playing with at the time (around 1979). The albums eventually wore out and I managed to replace them a few years ago. Two songs..Drops of Water and 25 Words Or Less still get played regulary as they always managed to cheer me up when I need to. My daughter who is 15 also loves 25 words, and often asks me to play it. I wish I could get these albums on CD or MP3 as I only have a vinyl and tape version. Any chance that these will be released on CD? Also, any change of you coming to England to play...now that would be something!! Recently Stephen Bishop cam to England to do two gigs and I was unable to get there. I think you know Stephen.
Anyway I'll keep playing your songs and thanks for the memories!!

Anyway, I'm also a fan of Jon Pousette-Dart and have been following what he's been doing recently. I noticed that he is doing some shows as a host of some songwriters and I saw Hugh Prestwood's name as one of the writers. I knew that you did several of his tunes, so looked up your site and here I am. I have your "Very Best Of..." in my truck, my 3 girls are all somewhat fans too, although as I rememeber reading an essay of yours years ago, they prefer music from bands called things like "The Snot Rockets"....! Anyway, just a hello and do you have any plans to come to the Northwest? Fishing is good up here you know (Jon has told me that he will get up here and go some day). I'll keep an eye on your schedule, would love to see you perform again sometime. Great to see you are keeping busy.

Do you remember spending a week in Door County WI with the Smeeths and a bunch of rowdy 13-15 yesr old guys? Took me a while to track you down but I have always wondered what you were up to. I really enjoyed your music then. And have enjoyed the bits and pieces on the website.
How long did you 'hang' with Bill Smeeth's daughter? Pam Gaulke McDonald in Richmond says hello.
You are more than welcome just to ring me up.

Comments: Dear Michal,
I have been divorced for 5 years from a physican. I must amit that your songs have helped alot. I have your greatest hits. But "Doors" was on my album and I miss that song. Are you happily married, I hope so. It is terrible to be alone. Friends are wonderful. But alone at night, I just can't get used to it. I hope you anwser me and tell me when you will be in the neighborhood of the midwest. I would love to invite you over for dinner or take you out. I don't cook for one, much. That sounds so dumb, but I think your are a wonderful singer.

Comments: Hi,Michael,
I was on my way to New York, when I heard you sing " This time of Year" on a local New York station. I was really taken by the easy way it was sung and the meaningful lyrics it contained.I've been trying to buy the album," Mistletoe and Memories" but haven't been able to do so. I Guess it was from the late 80's. I will continue to try to find a copy. It seems we all need to get back to basics this Christmas season.
Best wishes with your career.
Sincerely,
Judy

Comments: 11/2005 Michael, we met at Audiotek Studios on W Broadway in Mpls 1974 when you came in to borrow/rent a DBX sound suppressor from Dan Holmes. You watched me play a song (from my 1st(only)record, "Love to
Make Music By"-privately released in 1975 (Helicher Bros declined),so
I beat the pavement to WCCO AM, KEEY, KARE 11, 'This Must Be the Place' chan 4. I didn't get much airplay. A nice note from Denny Long and Steve Edstrom CCO radio. I heard and saw your same-time release (For All You Mad Musicians) At a guitar shop in Wayzata, bought it, loved it. Still do. Wanted to see you at state fair a couple summers back, missed it (bout of D from my bi-polar) I've always adored your guitar. I have a similar style-little Feliciano, little Lightfoot, some Michael Monroe, etc.
I played 70's clubs like: McCarthys, Michaels, White House, Holiday Inns. Still strum it a bit, teach some Comm Ed local School beginning
kid and adult folks. Haven't played a paid job for 20+ years. Miss it.Keep wanting to go back (I'm good) Life seems to get in the way.
Anyway, wanted to say 'hi'. Hope to begin a communique' with you.
Tell you, website 'PERSERVERANCE' writing was GREAT!. Now I'm 51 and my glory 20's-30's are behind. Gotta press on to the future. By the way, for mortgage money, I make sausage, meats and sell guitars...

I have looked on all the music sites for it as a download to know avail. I see you have it on a 3 cd collection which is awsome and I will buy it. I even did a search on Ebay only to find that it was only available then in LP form by Sanskrit Records. I am now thinking how old I am getting, but by having your music again may, just for a momemt, bring me back to an earlier time in my life when life seemed so easy. I was 19 when There is a Breeze was released. Glad I found your site!

I always said that when we renewed our wedding vows you would sing at our wedding. Well you might not have been there in person, but you DID sing "I Will Whisper Your Name" at the wedding we had for our 20th anniversary. Thank you for all the beautiful songs over the years...you're the best, and a very nice guy to boot!!!

They say that God has his ways of working miracles.
You came to Utah and performed in Sundance and in Park City
You were sweet enough to meet a friend of mine Jill Ekstrom.
She was so touched at your music, your kindness and the man behind the music. She broke her neck earlier this year and has been through so much. She still on rough days listens to your music as her way of toughing things through.
She is an amazing lady who means alot to so many people that she has helped over the years. Thank you for meaning alot to her and by helping her still smile, laugh and by sharing your gift of music, it has a healing power.
Please come back to Utah soon. We would love to come with her and hear your music in person. Thanks to her you now have new Michael Johnson fans in Utah.

What a sweet lady your sister Jan is. It's been so many years ago I don't remember.
I met you once in 1968 or so when I was married to your good friend Bill Settle. You had just come back from Spain where you went to study the guitar.
Just thought I'd say Hi. I remember what a sweet lady Jan was, don't remember Terry except that he was full of himself, I wasn't very old.
My mother's name maiden was Mershon and my Aunt Rose was Terry's blood relative. Take care. Just a trip back in time, I've always wondered what happened to Jan.

Comments: Michael, The only time I had ever seen you perform was at the Westbury Music fair on Long Island, and you were the warm up for Don Williams. You just blew me away!! It was at least 10 or even 15 years ago, and I remember it like it was yesterday. Being a guitarist and performer myself, I was just taken back by your work, and have decided to go back to work (after 5 years of a solo gig with my 12-string, 5 more years with a nightclub band, 5 more years of weddings, and a 15 year vacation!, but more importantly, I'm going to feature your work. Not enough people on this earth have even heard of you, and they need to feel what went into your Dedication of the love a man can have for a women in "The moon is still over her shoulders" and "Give me wings" . I just hope when I present them to a audiance, I will do them justice. I've been a romantic all of my 54 years, and your songs just hit the spot. I'm hoping that you'll perform somewhere I can get to without flying to North Dakota, but even if I had to it would be worth it. Thank you so much for your tremendous work and being an inspiration for guitar players everywhere. Clyde Newman

Comments: I saw Michael Johnson in 1977 when I went to Virginia Intermont College, Bristol VA. Small college - about 600 people - first year boys had been admitted. Small enough that when the concert was over, some of us went back stage to talk with him. It made me homesick when he said he was from Minnesota, as I was, too. In fact, he lived in Minnetonka not far from relatives. I bought two of his albums, which I ended up having to sell to a second-high store in 1985, to pay bills. Anyway, I was going through some things and found some information and thought I'd see if he was still around. Maybe I'll see him at SpamFest!

Comments: Just ordered a couple of CDs off your website -- after being re-introduced to your music last fall when I saw you were going to be in my area. I was a fan back in my college days, but had not kept up with your career. Years have passed and I thought I'd share a recent reaction I had to "Then & Now." I used to listen to "I'll Always Love You" dreaming of my current love at the time. Now, however, it's NOT romantic love I'm thinking of -- instead it's my 19 year old son, who has done just about EVERYTHING a teen can do to drive a wedge in the mother/son relationship. He's home for the summer, (after having flunked two classes out of four!), being irresponsible, drinking, etc., and I was just about ready to ship him out. And then I heard "I'll Always Love You" and realized if I gave up on him, that "I'd really miss him after all." Love is indeed a mystery! This kid who has driven me away and hurt me so deeply, has truly broken my heart. Yet......"I'll Aways Love You" actually helped change my perspective. My love for him is still there, and if he ever changes his mind about his destructive lifestyle, I'll be there with open arms. Thanks for helping me realize that. And I thought you'd get a kick out of the fact that your music reaches folks in "multi-purpose" ways!

Comments: I worked on a ranch in the Big Horn Mountains in Wyoming in mid 70's with a bunch of guys who became my lifelong best friends. After a hard day or anytime we wanted to mellow-out we had MJ playing in the bunkhouse. At a rough time in my life MJ's music and lyrics got me over the hump. I can still sing a mean MJ tune in the shower, especially if I want my teenage kids to leave me in peace. I thought i'd never be able to replace my early albums and I'm thrilled to have them on the way to me. MJ, keep touring. I really want to see another show before I kick the bucket.

At this time in her life, Ginene has reneal cell cancer. The Dr. had given her 4 months to live back in 2003, she has beat all odds against this beast, but she is still fighting. Her husband is having a benifit dinner cruise in Seattle on April 1. I know this is short notice but I have been trying to think of people she hasn't seen in along time that she would love to see and your name came to mind. I think she would love to see you again, if you can make it that would be great, if not than maybe just a note to her would cheer her too.
You can check it out on her web site at www.ginene.com or you can call her at 206-780-5181 or you can call me if you want to know more. 651-674-0348. Thanks, Ginene's sister Sandy

Comments: I writing you to tell you one of my favorite memories. My dad(Chuck), my uncle Jim, you and maybe a few others(memory getting fuzzy)were playing in Steam Boat Springs Colorado. We were all hanging out after the performance, and my mom turned around and saw us talking and she a had camera in her hand and told us to turn and face her, so you gave me a huge hug and she took the picture. My mom put the picture up on the wall next to all the music things of my dads and I think of that night everytime I see that picture. That was 11 years old. I think I was 14 or 15 years old at the time.
Thank you for the great memory,

How are you? Where are you? I check your web site periodically and have written on the message board. I'd love to hear from you and find out if you ever might come to California. I miss you and hearing you. I don't remember if you ever met my husband, Jed, or if he has ever seen you play. He would remember but he's not here for me to ask him.
I would really like to get in touch with you. We are going to be in the mid west for a week over the 4th of July and we might come to Nashville. If you're there, I would really like to see you. But if I can't find you, it will be difficult to meet up.
So, if you get this message please respond.
Thanks, Your old friend, Liz

I have followed your work since the mid-70's and you remain one of my very favorite performers. From the beginning I have been as interested in your guitar technique as in the songs themselves and after all this time finally get to see you perform at Jimbo's on Tuesday. My wife and I are flying in from California for the evening and will be joined by my best friend Bill, also an admirer, and his wife who will be driving across Colorado. I have no idea what your playlist will be, but it would be wonderful if "There is a Breeze" was on it...if you're up for it. However, if you're not, no worries. Whatever song you're playing, I'll be delighted. See you Tuesday - Steve

Comments: Hello Michael,
My name is Michael Smith and I am currently doing research for a book on Billboard's Hot 100 Hits of the 80's. I would be interested to learn the background story of the song "You Can Call Me Blue", as well as what it was like for you as an artist in the music industry during the 1980's.
It would be a pleasure and honor to hear back from you. Your contribution to music helped to make the 1980's my favorite decade, one that is full of wonderful memories for me. I thank you for your time and welcome your participation in this project.
And good news! I have just equipped myself with a new speakerphone and recording setup so that I can better handle phone interviews, which have been much requested by artists I have contacted thus far.
Please let me know when is a good time to schedule a phone interview or if you would rather communicate by e-mail. My contact info is as follows:

Comments: I just wanted to say that I love your music. I did't know your name
until I was looking for your song The Moon is Still Over Her Shoulder
on Morpheus -cause I have looked other places and not knowing the artists name is a bit of a handicap! Anyway I found it and then searched and found this site. I'm the sort who doesn't care how "famous" someone is or isn't and I tend to forget the "stars", but their work, if it touches me stays with me. Maybe that's what its all about. Several years ago I saw you at a concert where you were playing with someone I don't remember at all, but you sang many things I loved and I tried to buy an album that night, lines were insane and my partner wasn't interested in waiting forever. After that it got pushed aside, I forgot your name ( i have a name problem anyway) and I have looked sporadically since. Like many other great country artists we no longer hear you on the radio, but I wanted you to know that there are people who remember your music although I downloaded the song, I will buy a CD as soon as I can afford one again- three months of my husband being out of work kind of limits the disposable income. Thank you for your beautiful work - regardless of airtime and spots on CMT, keep playing, keep singing we need all of the music we can get in this crazy world.

Comments: Hi Michael,
Great concert at the Hopkins Center for the Performing Arts on Dec. 26, 2004! I especially enjoyed hearing "Bristlecone Pine".
I recently retired after teaching school in Hopkins for 35 years. One of my retirement gifts was a framed photo taken by a friend/artist of a rugged tree growing along the north shore area of Minnesota.
It now sits above our fireplace in the livingroom, with a copy of the "Bristlecone Pine" lyrics next to it.
When I saw the photo, I immediately thought of your song, and how it connected to my lifetime of teaching.
Thanks for the inspiration!
Keep singing, playing, and writing.
Sincerely, Kathy Hering

All were incredible performances. How do I get him back to Door County or Cedarburg? Do I need to picket or send letters to the boards that govern these venues? Any plans to appear in this area in the near future? Nothing against Fort Atkinson, just the drive.

Comments: Have been reading "Perseverance I and II" as well as some of the other missives again over the last few days. Thanks for those. They're important. And true. That's a rare commodity in the music mines; someone who will speak the truth to you. Not that I'm whining, most people are probably speaking the truth as they see it.
Anyway, thanks. That's about it, really. For the music of course, but also for the spirit behind it. And for reminding the rest of us minstreling up the miles with a guitar in one hand and a weatherbeaten notebook in the other that the first thing you better decide if you're going to commit to this religion is which god you're gonna get up and pray to each day. There are, of course, several from which to choose.
There have been multiple times over the past years that I've thought about "quitting" as you put it, and more than a few of those times, it's been a quick re-read through the Book of Johnson (some printe-off and posted on the studio wall copies of your articles) that have moved me to sit my whiny ass back down at the mixer, or pick up the phone one more time to bug that club owner, or just try to work out that annoying bridge that isn't moving the song forward.
Anyway, thanks.

I'm sure you've heard it many times over the years, but your music is enormously evocative. Your music and your playing style was a revelation for a kid trying to figure out if there was something more to musical life than rock and roll. I really appreciate it. It broadened the horizon of what was cool for all of us wannabe guitarists working those West Bank dives.
I tracked your website down to see if I could get your early albums on compact disc. I just bought them -- thanks! I couldn't find them anywhere else. Hope all is going well and that you are heading east at some point to a venue in the DC area.
Again, thanks for the music!

I've seen Hendrix, Kotke, Rankin, Loggins, Messina, Feliciano, "the Great Guitars," Matheny . . . a whole host of guitarists (and singers). And none measures up to Michael Johnson's playing. What a unique treat to experience his music in a small and intimate venue. He deserves better outlets, as an artist, but the gift he gave to those of us in the audience last night was truely rare. I was with a friend who saw MJ even earlier in his career than did I; a friend who once shared a beer with him after a concernt in MN. We both hope you stay well and that the work continues to feed both your passion and contentment.

Comments: Dear Michael, so great to hear you in person and chat--however briefly--at the reception in Betsy Bowen's gallery after the Unplugged Concert in Grand Marais, MN. I'm kind of a gab and hesitate to engage artists like yourself, Bernie Leadon, John Veznor etc in extended conversation--suspect youve heard all this and more before. Nevertheless, after listening to your "Then and now" I must reiterate what I said at Betsy's --you're not just an entertainer with a great voice and a masterful guitar. Not that those assets wouldnt be sufficient for most. Your music has something to say of importance. I suppose I should have guessed that you might be a bit more of a deeper thinker than the average bloke from your willingness to support NH folk school.
I found NH by accident in 95--I was a speaker in Grand Marais for a conference sponsored by the international joint commission. The IJC is a US Canada group that considers all sorts of matters affecting the Great Lakes which we share. I had just retired from the Forest Service as a research forester/economist/sociologist and I was talking about something called Ecological Economics. Hardly mainstream thinking but an important new perspective I believe. Regardless, I found NH walking to the meeting--and I've been caught up in their activities ever since. I volunteered at first, building the buildings, the Mackinaw boat etc and finally teaching this summer.
If I have a disappointment in your website, its the absence of the lyrics for your great humorous knockoffs like--You make me feel so, so. Any chance of finding this stuff on your site in the future.
Also, I hope you'll be coming back to Grand Marais next summer. And if you do perhaps we can chat again. If your interested, Mark Hansen, Tom Healy NH founders and other fun-loving blokes try to put our love of adventure and nature in practice by hitting the road, primarily in Canada just across the border to sail or canoe or whatever to experience nature and great conservation/food/and (perish the thought for recovering alcoholics) a great scotch. Would you like to join us?? I'm so glad to have met and listened to you.
My wife Linda and I sing a few songs for friends in harmony--0ld time stuff like "tell me why". Bluer than Blue or the Beatles' Michelle force me to sing over the top in harmony every time I hear them--not a pretty sight perhaps but what can I say....

A friend of mine in San Antonio, Texas and I used to perform your songs together. Give me Wings was always a show stopper, but, no one could compare to your performance. Hope someday you make it to this area. Thanks for the memories and the music, Diane

Comments: First, for your information, several weeks ago I found you on the website: www.michaeljohnson.com and now that site has been suspended. Luckily, I did not give up, and found this site. Such a wealth of information (and sources for CDs)
Years ago I wrote Michael when he was located in Nashville (I think someone by the name of Bowles was manager?) and asked about the song Sailing w/o a Sail, and it was unavailable at that time, but Michael was so kind and sent me a cassette with that song on it (this was pre-CD time). I was so impressed with this act of kindness and I have and play that cassette (and another cassette where I recorded just that song over and over) to this day. I still think it is one of the most romantic songs written. I am so happy to have found this website. Thanks.

Comments: Dear Michael,
To say I was surprised to receive an E Mail back from you is the understatement of the year!
I have been reading your website information and it has confirmed what I already thought. That you are a regular guy who just happens to be a musical genius (in my opinion at least). I have just purchased your albums "Aint dis da Life" and "For all you mad musicians". I was not aware that you had covered the John Martyn song "may you never" (John is also Scottish by the way).He wrote it as a lullaby for his kids I believe. It has wonderful sentiment for me being the dad to a nine year old boy. As you say on your website covers are a good thing provided they are done with style. I don't know if you know much about John but there was a recent television documentary on over here about his musical life and it has been a colourful one to say the least! He lives in Ireland now and has been very ill recently with the result that he has had to have a leg amputated. He has vowed to keep touring while he still can.Whilst on the subject of other artists my big influencers over the years have been: Michael Macdonald, John Martyn, You, Alfie Zappacosta, Cat Stevens, James Taylor, Alison Krauss, Celine Dion, Elton John, Art Garfunkell, Enya, Bread, Etc Etc and of course The Beatles.
I hope you don't mind but I have forwarded your E Mail to Dougie Maclean (Dougies website details attached) as he is a "big hitter" over here on the folk music scene. As you possibly know he is a big pal of Cathy Mattea (sorry about the spelling) and has collaborated with her on many occasions.
Have you ever heard of Celtic connections? I enclose the web details as this might be a perfect excuse for you to visit Scotland in the future. Many of your peers have visited this music festival over the years and have returned again and again.

in my mind as a classic 70`s love song.I know Sawyer Brown did a
remake of it in wich is good but your voice gave the song that
"sound" of you actually being there with the distress of a "play-
by-play" account of the relationship. I know that sounds weird but
if you close youe eyes and listen it`s like actually being there.

Comments: Dear Michael,
I and an ever increasing number of my freinds and family have enjoyed your music since 1978 when by chance one of your records was played on BBC Radio 2.
Throughout the years since i have often turned to your songs and have found new meanings for me depending on the challenges at the time, Deaths of parents, lost loves etc, etc.
Thanks to the internet i have now bought almost all of your albums on CD mostly from the USA and Japan. For some reason not many people in Britain know about you or your majestic songs. (I have managed to get your records played a couple of times on the BBC and local radio but not nearly enough is heard of you over here. Will you ever concider touring here (Particuarly Scotland). We have a great history of folk music (Dougie Mclean lives near here and owns a great pub where improvisation and spontaneus instrumental playing is encouraged).
If you don't come here i may have to visit the USA to see one of your concerts sometime. I am 44 years old and work in Sales management so hopefully a bonus will come at the right time.
Kindest Regards.

In the early eighties maybe late 70's you stayed at the hotel I worked for when you were recording in Nashville I think. I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed our conversations and I wanted to thank you for being such a great friend at the time. I have listened to the album you gave me (dialogue) over and over (It's scratched a bit but I still have it in my collection). I have been looking for the cd but seems I can't buy it in the stores so I'm gonna try the internet. Sorry for the lengthy email I really just wanted to say thanks. Comments: After spending years searching for 'There is a Breeze' and 'Mad Musicians,' I have finally found and placed my order for the set. I understand they will arrive within days and I am pleased in no small measure.
Michael, I don't know if you read these things, and I'm certain you don't recall this episode, but I interviewed you about 30 years ago as a young radio news hound after a concert you gave at the University of Minnesota/Morris - I was working at a little radio station in Montevideo at the time. You were gracious and accomodating, and even autographed my 'Breeze' album, which I still have, albeit absent a needle for my long-retired turntable. The fate of my 'Mad Musicians' LP is unknown - it was swipted by a DJ at a radio station in Richmond, Virginia back in the mid-80s.
The chance to hear those songs again after so many years - Happier Days, Cain's Blood, Love and Sex, Old Folks (which chokes me up just thinking about it), On the Road, Gypsey in the Photograph, I could go on and on - is simply smashing and I feel like a kid waiting for the mailman to bring me the thing I ordered from the back of a comic book. But there's another, more important reason I'm greatly anticipating the arrival of these albums.
I went to high school during the early and mid-1970s in Minnetonka (Go Skippers!) and your music played a part during my formative years. In a small way, these two albums and the messages in your music helped guide me toward adulthood. Some would say I turned out okay.
Today, I have two teenaged daughters of my own - 16 and 19 - and I want them to hear Michael Johnson the way I did. In my mind, it's valuable for them - dare I say important - to hear the music and, God willing, absorb some of the messages contained in that music.
I am unable to imagine the musician's life, but I cannot believe there have not been one or two moments in which you worried your performances were little more than some gig in some tavern or beer joint between Duluth and Chicago. Please know your performances meant so much more, and made a difference, to this now slightly overweight, middle-aged guy. You and your music matter.
I hope this finds you as well and happy and content as I.
With very best wishes and warmest regards,
Scott Hogenson

Comments: Hi Michael.
What a thrill for me on May 19, 2004 at Mickey's Diner in St. Paul, Minnesota. To see you having lunch there at the same time my boyfriend and I were.
I kept looking over at your booth, wondering "who is he?" I work with the public and recognize MANY people about town. I live in Minneapolis, but go to St Paul now and then. After a few minutes, I had said to my boyfriend, "That's Michael Johnson!" Didn't know (or care, ha) who the lady was. I silently freaked out!!
I'm so glad I had enough nerve to go over and say hello to you. I had no choice but to walk right by you, anyway, so I got up the nerve. I have most of your albums and some on CD. You once signed all of them for me at the Minnesota State Fair, too.
Thanks for being so friendly when I was just a stranger to you, but you not to me.
Made my year!!

Comments: Hey Michael!
I was doing a google search for a relative of mine and up popped a reference to my entry in your guestbook. March 15th of '98! Can it have been that long ago? Things have changed a lot since then including my views on the Then and Now album. At the time I was disappointed with the newer versions of the old songs, but since then have come to enjoy them too. No sooner had I gotten to the site then I remembered I had just bought the Classic Masters CD yesterday and hadn't opened it yet. So now I've got the old songs in their original versions playing, and though I can never go back to being younger and more hopeful, go back to a time when skies were bluer and the air smelled sweeter and it seemed like I had all the time in the world, I can at least go back in my mind and remember it a little clearer than I did yesterday.
I've always played a game with myself, making up mental lists of those precious things I'd want with me if I were stuck on a deserted island for the rest of my life. It would of course be an island with some power and a stereo system, and in the old days i could only take one album or ten songs, each by a different artist, nowadays it's a CD of 20. LOL In either case, one of those songs was always the original version of This Night Won't Last Forever. Well, it's playing now and reminding me of lost loves and lost opportunities and the hope for a brighter tomorrow I needed back then.
Thanks for all the memories and all the great songs from long ago!

I was there with my sister and we had seen you once before at North Hennepin Communuity College in 1979 or 1980. We loved your music and voice then and still do. When we were driving home after the concert I told my sister that my face hurt from smiling and laughing for 2 hours straight. I can't remember the last time that happened. Thank you so very much. We'll see you again next year when you come back.

Comments: I went to your concert in February. Loved your music and jokes :-) Here's one for you: Before you criticize someone walk a mile in their shoes so that when you criticize them you'll be a mile away and have their shoes. . .
My dad used to play guitar with you in '74. I used to listen to my dad when i was little play "Rooty Toot Toot For The Moon" on the guitar and I loved it. So when I was a bit older I started listening in dept to your music and I love it.

Comments: For my daughter's 17th birthday, she took her best friend to see your performance at Orchestra Hall. They loved it . I had sung "Rooty Toot Toot", "On the Road" and "You've Got to be Taught" to her as she grew up. When vinyl became vogue, she dug through my records and found "There is a Breeze". She taught herself guitar to learn the songs on that LP. She turned all her girlfriends on to it. So, now once again, you have a teenage fan base at Wayzata High school. Just what you needed, right? We didn't know about your site and could only find a copy of "There is a Breeze" on CD as an import from Japan. Thanks for referencing mjblue at your concert. Purchased "The Early Albums" and now these girls think the songs from "Mad Musicians" are way cool. Thanks for the music. I don't know if you recognize the name. I was a friend of Tab Laven's and used to teach guitar at the Guitar Store in Wayzata in '73 and'74. By the way, the Orchestra Hall performance was great. Thanks.

Comments: Hello, Your music has been a part of my life for 20+ years. I've introduced my husband to your music and he's a bigger fan than I am.(And that's something!)He drives semi for a living and listens to your cds on his drives. He's memorized quite a few and can sing almost as well as you.(Don't tell him that, he'll be jealous) He impressed his friends last year in the BWCA. They asked Stace to sing and he played guitar and sang Cain's Blood and On the Road and others. It was a calm evening, and sound carries across water a long way. After he was done singing, they could hear applause across the lake from another campsite. It was awesome! I have the best of both. My husband singing your songs to me. Only one problem, no sheet music. Where can I get the music for your songs? Right now, he's trying to guess at the chords in the songs. Please help! Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Kate

Comments: My husband and I really enjoyed your singing at CAFE CARPE this past Dec.
My husband has a special 50th birthday this year and would love to have you sing for a small group of friends and family. Would you be in the WI area, during summer or fall at Cafe Carpe? What would your charge be for a private party? Maybe it could coincide with a booked date there which we could add on another day?
This is a surprise, please email when you have the opportunity.
Sincerely, Cheryl Anthony

Comments: Please tell me you intend to have "There Is A Breeze" released on CD domestically. This is an essential recording, a beautiful one, a favorite of mine (and of many) and its conspicuous absence on CD or hybrid SACD from the U.S. catalog is a shame.

I checked out A friend of mine because one of my best mates in the world is John Read's son and yeah, it's nice to hear good songs being performed and recorded in the way the were intended to be done!
Chris (John's son) and I, record "Good Living" some years ago, it was a milestone in my progression and I'm thrilled others think so too.
Thanks for the reminder!
